The first true supercar

The only reasons that it wouldnt be classed as a supercar are the badge (the main reason) and possibly the looks.
Yes indeed...I think one must differentiate between a car with supercar performance- and a TRUE supercar (of which the first, in my humble opinion was the Miura) - which is the holistic package of jaw dropping good looks, performance and presence. The GTR (and I've got one on order - so am a fan) can only claim one, OK possibly two, of those criteria. Gold said:
As much as I love the Muira (especially in the colour) the first true supercar was the Mercedes Gullwing which appeared earlier than the Muira and was undoubtably the Veyron of its time.'Supercar' is a very subjective term and has undoubtably changed over time.
Whilst the Gullwing, Muira and Countach were undoubtably supercars the bar has changed.
For me a modern supercar has to be able of over 200 mph but it also has to be something special, a cut above the average high performance car.
I dont consider a Ferrari F430 to be a supercar but do consider an F599 to be a supercar.
Cars like the Enzo, Zonda, Veyron, CGT and Murcielago etc are undoubtably supercars.

for anyone, anytime, anywhere.Presenting a supercar without supercar limitations.
and the car is...the Nissan GT-R.
A supercar? let the debate commence.....
The Ferrari 512TR was regarded a supercar in its day but i would hedge a bet that a BMW 330D would give it a run fir its money over any given circuit in the UK. A supercar is more than performance and that "more than" is something that Nissan may never have no matter how quickly it actaully goes. Same could be argued with the almost perfect Audi R8 and flawless 997's.and the car is...the Nissan GT-R.

I really like the GT-R. I'm close to ordering one myself.
With regard to it being a supercar, thats a non starter really. The badge precludes that ever occuring in my opinion. I've owned two 350Z's and will buy the GT-R in the knowledge that it won't be looked on in the same light as some of its peers but imo that is reflected in the price. £55k with performance arguably better than cars twice its price.
Aesthetically its not a patch on any F-car or Lambo but the LP560 at £140k+ is not £85k better looking in my opinion.
Saying all that, I may just buy myself another Gallardo

Only entirely subjective opinions should count here, I'd say!
To that end, the term 'supercar' was created for one car only.
The entire 'point' of the 'supercar' was created for one marque only.
When all said and done, the 'reason' that any car is termed, in some way, as alike to a 'supercar' is that it might, just, be considered somehow comparable to an actual 'supercar', on a dark night perhaps, with a great deal of added alcohol/other drug of choice...
Nothing, at all, before or since really comes close to the original 'supercar'.
I re-draw your attention(s) to the first line! This is entirely my utterly biased and obviously very, very subjective p-o-v, so you don't really need me to say which car and which marque, but:
There is only one model of Lamborghini that I haven't yet driven.
Most of the front V12 Lamborghinis are like good ol' chums and I have outstanding offers to drive the types of them that I haven't, as yet. (Soon, I hope!)
Mid V8 Lambos are my friends - I really adore the Silhouette, such lovely, little (and very rare!) creatures! (Full fuel tanks can be repeatedly emptied as a matter of courtesy!)
The Countach, Diablo and Murciélago are like brothers, in a way, and even most Gallardos seem to say, 'Come on! Have a longer drive, y'know you want to!" but, the Miura...
I / we are not worthy. I / we should not even dare to wish to know the passion that they have built in even the least nut and bolt.
In my personal slim and slight volume, there are no other cars by comparison, let alone supercars!
Other performance cars be damned, even modern super- and hypercars be damned - there is only one, true, absolute supercar.
"...mind you Ethel, the glovebox of that Lamborgee-ny My-oora is a bit small isn't it? And there's really no room your golf clubs..."

Lets remember who coined the phrase supercar, the late great LJK Setright. It will cme as no surprise that i was a great fan of his writing, although he was a very odd peculiar man.
His pet likes were, chassis poise balance and ride; effortless performance which was accessable and decent ergonomics. He lattery believed that all cars should be automatics! He was a great fan of Honda, beleived passionatly that the Lambo V12 engine was designed by them and had a great knowlege of engineering all of which was self taught.
Using his criteria for the term he invented what would be a supercar today?
a Merc C63?
I agree that style and beuty must feature, but neiher of these figured in the original definition!

The original Supercar? It isnt subjective at all, it is very much an *objective* thing...the Merc 300SL.
If somebody wished to be picky and say the performance isnt good enough for a Supercar then title of Original Supercar still remains objective and it goes to the XKSS. Which frankly makes the Miura look ugly, overweight, flat footed, dull, boring and well...common.
And about +10yrs too late.
