599 manual gearbox - advice pls.
Discussion
I am in the market for 599 and put down my deposit some 12 months ago for a new car but with nearly new cars starting to come down to list or below might consider a pre-owned one. Have seen a manual 599, which apparently are few and far between but have not driven it yet. Drove a 599 F1 recently and found the F1 box to be very good. What is the verdict on a manual against the F1 paddleshift manual?.

the market will allways want an f1...
Agreed. You're likely to take a spanking on resale. There will always be someone who prefers a manual, but it'd take ages to find someone and you'd need to sell private as dealers will always low bid.
If I were buying (I may look at them more closely once they've started to shed properly!) I'd definitely go F1 (despite loving manual cars).
Surely it is down to price. If the manual is bought cheaply enough, the price of ownership should be no more than for an F1. Admittedly, you still have the inconvenience of a possibly slow sale.
Slightly OT, but I'm enjoying a few days in London and saw a dark blue(?) 599 take off in Piccadilly the other night - what a sound! Even my non car enthusiast mate with me was impressed.

Clorenzen, if you buy it, I could be interested in buying it from you if/when you decide to sell in future. Spec is spot on for me and one F1 box will be enough with my Scuderia.
As others have said, 95% of buyers will probably want an F1 box so make sure you haggle hard to take this into account. I'd call a few F dealers first, to gauge what they would really bid for a similar example.

In the short term , I'd agree that an F1 car will sell quicker... In 10yrs time (Ok so a relatively long time frame), I would wager that manual cars will be worth more and may evern sell quicker (less to go wrong, more intimate/classic feel etc.)...
I'm getting excited about the idea of getting hold of a 550 but it occurs to me that if I wait long enough, the 575's will be down to my budget... Now then, all 550's are manual but only a minority of 575's are (my guess) and I was just wondering... does anyone else thing that the value of 575 F1's could even drop below the value of 550's within the next 5 years???
P.S. I saw a loverly manual Scaglietti the other day. Now that's what I call a gear knob! It was the size of a flippin' tangerine!

I remember when the 612 came out that everyone said you should spec it with a manual, as the F1 box wasn't quite there. The box on the 599 is apparently brilliant, but it's still not as seamless as a dual-clutch set-up. Depends how long you want to keep it - in the future it'll have been superceded and I reckon there'll be people who will quite want a Ferrari open-gate as it's something that isn't diminished by time and offers greater driver interaction.

I'd say the same. Someone with the disposable income to buy a new 599 probably doesn't worry about highly sophisticated technology going haywire... but someone buying a ten year old car is likely to consider if a far more critical factor and will be more likely to look for something that any good mechanic can fix at a sensible price - ie, a manual. My other concern with these increasingly complex cars is that, in ten years time, will the software that they are running on still be supported?Think I'm falling into the now small minority who prefer manuals to F1 boxes. My Scuderia arrives in a few weeks and will be a great test of this, but recent past history - including driving a 599 at Maranellos - makes me wonder if I should stick to the old way of doing things...
I don't disagree that the gear change is faster, foolproof etc etc, its just that it feels almost too much like a videogame, and therefore not as involving, to me.
As others have said, buy what you want, just get a deal on the way in.

YES. Ultimately any F1 from this age will be worth less than a manual as all automated manuals will become quicker and will all probably be dual clutch soon.I'm getting excited about the idea of getting hold of a 550 but it occurs to me that if I wait long enough, the 575's will be down to my budget... 599 - depends how long you keep it for. again ultimately the manual will be worth more, even more so because they will be so rare.
Dear all
Thank you for the input. I think I will take it for a drive and see how it woks out. What surprised me, was the fact that there was a lot of legroom for the left foot and knee to operate the clutch - this cannot be said about RHD manual Porsches where you as a tall driver really are compromised.
