Quattroporte will give a different impression to others. The BMW is just a BMW at the end of the day!

I have driven a 2008 AUTO and loved it. Ok..the interior has some faults Sat nav works fine but looks cheap. But i felt like a king trust me in it. And By god can it shift ! I had to use some extra gas when a London Bus pulled out as i was passing it and i loved the confidence the car gave me. Maybe the BMW is a better drivers car etc? But for the OWNERSHIP the Maserati will walk all over it. I think they are stunning

a client / friend of mine bought a Qp just before Christmas last year.

He told me he has never enjoyed just sitting in a car as much as his Maserati - it's a cream/white colour and is getting more and more bug splats all the time. I suggested he get the car valeted and detailed but for a marketing chap he's a bit behind the door in that respect and said he'd never heard of such things!

and a BMW, whoever's breathed on it and whatever it is, (as the other poster said), is just a BMW. When you drive it, many people will hate you sooner than love you but...

...if you buy a Maserati people will assume that you are a person of great taste and refinement, even if you flick your snot lumps out of the window in traffic jams and f*rt in mixed company without any hint of restraint...

No no and thrice no, the B5 all the way!

Before you take your respective safety catches off trust me as knowing just a little bit about large Italian four doors and although I own a B5 I have also spent quite a bit of time in a Quatty V as well

Firstly though a word about this whole Alpina thing, it is not a BMW and it doesn’t have a BMW chassis number. Until recently I would never have thought about owning a Alpina as like you, I thought of them as just another BMW. Think that and you are missing out on a complete hoot and the true ‘Anti BMW’ from within and I have been amazed at the positive comments from folk that know about cars “Oh its an Alpina, nice”

It goes without saying the B5 is faster, in fact it just isn’t faster it will take the Quatty V apart without breaking sweat but we know it isn’t all about that. its far more economical (28 mpg on a run) and is just as nice a place to sit in as Alpina do got to town with their interiors and I can actually get in the back of my B5 and I felt pretty damn snug in the Quatty v

Given the sort of money you pick a B5 up for you would have enough wedge left over to go and buy a Quatty IV or III which ought to be factored in to the debate

In all honesty does anybody think the Quatty V has lost some of the ‘wow factor’ and is descending into the realms of the Footballer and the Project Kahn Crew? They just seem a little bit too popular and a little bit to accessible in a way their predecessors and indeed other big Italians saloons never did.

Personally I’d save myself a pile of wedge and buy a mint Quatty IV and do something else the wedge I’d saved

No read my post again, the descent into Kahness has already befallen Rolls, Bentley and Aston with big wheels and God knows what else and I fear the same fate awaits Quatty V as they fall into the hands of people who know no better.

Of course this alone is not a reason to avoid them but to my mind Maserati are in danger of becoming victims of their own success and seem to have lost just a bit of the exclusivity that once made them great.

To see a Khmasin or a Kyalalmi when I was a kid was a bit of an event where as today a town like BSE has any number of Mazzers running around, one belonging to Vario-Rob Senior and its ok but somehow lacking the certain special ingredient they once posessed

Don’t get me wrong, the fact they still exist in good health is marvellous when companies like ISO and DeTomaso who once made ultra exclusive four door saloons have disappeared, hell they even survived DeTomaso ownership intact which was an act of God

But to think they are some sort of highbrow thinking mans alternative to an Alpina B5 is way off the mark and is nothing more than getting caught up in the romanticism of the marque.

But there again what would I know

The new sport GT S looks stunning. Has different suspension and brakes to other QP's. I am seriously tempted. Has anyone driven one of these?

I'll check with my client - would a December '07 delivered car perhaps be a Qp GT S ???

(I know so very, very little about modern Maseratis and sod-all more about older one's as well, although I have a soft spot for a particular Khamsin I know which is a silver car with blue indoors but which is sadly an automatic, oh well)...

Or, I have a mate aka the editor of Auto Italia (CLANG! went the dropped name!) who might have a good idea as well! I'll report back if I get any information...

The easily distinguishable difference is the GT-S has black window surrounds (as opposed to chrome) and colour coded door handles.

There are other differences obviously but these you can spot from a distance.

...GT-S' interior is a much nice place to be IMO over the other models too.

A Maserati is a Maserati. An Alpina, a brilliant-big-bks car, is still a BMW.

PS I've owned both - guess which one I've still got?

So you're saying a BMW has never been chavved up?

Does the B5 take a M5 apart? Just wondering as the QP did a faster lap time than the M5 in Evo mag.

Would anybody argue that todays Maserati's are the poor relation to the Biturbo's "things" on the 80's?

What were you saying about Kahn?

You haven't owned a B5, though, have you?

In a world where uber Audi and BMW are liberally accused of overcharging due to declared brand and/or image limitations, so the B5S may suffer similar, unjust and comprehensive misjudgement.

Evo called them [Alipnas] 'the pinstripes of the motoring world' [or something to that effect] and that's an accurate assessment.

Ignoring false Italiante and gunning straight for the hearts of the cognoscenti with nothing to prove and everything to gain by blitzing 99% of all comers in a fashion seen almost nowhere else in motoring, it's about as far from 'just another BMW' as you can get.

You would be nothing more than a fashion victim to select the QP over the Teuton: it is indominatable, it is a master of all trades: it is sublime.

Buy the B5S and be a master of your own destiny, not some pooch to the whims of the masses. wink

Don't get me wrong, the QP is sensational: however the depth of ability of the top Alpina stuff is simply an unknown quantity to many.

I'm simply shouting from the highest roof top just how good it is/they are. beer

You could hardly declare QP's to be for the masses, they are as rare as hen's teeth. If the time it takes for you to get from A to B was the only criteria when choosing a car, then everybody would be driving Evo's, but they are not.

No but a QP is often cited as the default carriage of performance orientated saloondom by commentators.

Alpina comes in below the radar.

its a BMW with a chip and sports exhaust (well , just about !!) Ive owned a old Alpina and loved it. Yes it was better than its BMW brother. But for a few ££ i could do the same with the original. At the end of the day its a BMW. The Maserati could do with a better interior for its price . But in the latest version (Proper auto) its lovely. Most think of it as bad from the reviews they have read. Ive driven a few (Rich clients) and love the Auto box. The Alpina maybe is the better car. But the image is all wrong these days. Same as the Bentley Cont. Might be better ....but look at the image it now has !! its a tarted up Volkswagen that is more common than a taxi in London
