430 Front end paint quality
Discussion
Is all 430 paint very soft? on my recent trip to Le Mans I seem to have picked up a stupid amount of little chips on the whole front valance (all the plastic bits) but none on the metal higher areas.
I did here that Ferraris are all like this and a front in respray is almost a service item? I think I will have to have it resprayed and then armourfended (much as I hate armourfend).

The paint quality is shocking on my friends 430 spider. All around the rear arches inside on the lip the paint has lifted off.
It looks like there has been some stonechips and they have now corroded.I assume these panels are alloy?
It looks terrible and hes having a bit of a battle with the dealers to get it sorted, car is about 2 years old and covered about 8k.

That sound awful! Hope he gets it sorted!
Hmm,
I'm getting here out tomorrow to go for a blast after two weeks of nothing I shall inspect every inch - but I'm fairly sure it's limited to the front valence, the bonnet is a metal alloy (aluminium like the rest of the metal panels I think) and it seems fine but I'll check the rear, funny thing was I had a very traffic free run to and from Le Mans and I make a point of not driving up people's behinds - however it did piss it down on the way so there may have been a fair amount junk in the air which may not have helped, still it should be able to put up with spray.... ;(

I picked up my new spider last Friday. It has £10k's worth of special order paint but the finish is patchy to say the least in places and my previous Gallardo's put it to shame in this respect. There's a lot to be said for German quality control standards being used in Italian factories obviously! Even the paint finish on my Maserati GranTurismo which was half the price of the 430 is far better and it's hand painted (Grigio Touring) by Ferrari too.
I've had the whole front end of mine covered with Paintshield's best film plus the sills and door mirror backs as I didn't fancy a miss matched respray on the colour.

In answer to your question yes Ferrari paint is on the soft side which obviously makes the risk of picking up chips & other paint defects that much greater.I did here that Ferraris are all like this and a front in respray is almost a service item? I 'detail' prancing horses for a living & front bumpers are prone to chipping. You may also want to check the leading edge of the lower vent infront of the rear wheels as this is a bit of a 'hotspot' too.
I'd personally rather get a quality bodyshop to spray the front bumper as/when required rather than have armourguard applied.

Slightly off topic but it could be worse you could be driving a Honda (uber, uber soft paint) or a new BMW (orange peel as standard)

Surely it is a mis-conception that soft paint chips easily? And I'll admit that I thought this too until I was corrected the last week when I was looking at my poor pock marked nose after Le Mans.
If they put too much hardener (or whatever process it is) in the paint and the paint becomes brittle that it chips a lot. The softer paint with a small amount of give, seems to withstand chips better.
Also, my black front lip was through to bare fibreglas in places so bad was the peppering ... apparently this should have a plasticised coating applied first before the paint specifically to help absorb/repell stone damage.
I will be getting a nose job and bonnet done at the end of the year and am seriously tempted by some sort of paint protection
