Has anyone has this rather unfortunate event happen to them?
If so was there any easy fix apart from paying a dealer vast sums to fix?
The key has literally snapped off in the ignition socket with the barrel on the first turn with not enough metal left sticking out to get any leverage!!
frown
Any help thankfully received!!

Magnet? Blutac? Take housing out and tap lock?

You might need to turn it back to "off", though, to release the key as one would expect.

What in the GT mate? yikes It won't be too hard to try some of the ideas above and removing the colwing, ignition switch & barrel shouldn't be to much of a head ache. I have all the tool's needed here so if it's driveable pop round tomorrow (Saturday) if you like. If it isn't then i can come over to your place. Give me a phone

Try superglue and put the key back together, slim hope otherwise could be off to a dealer. Could also try AA/RAC they must have seen this this before.

This happened to a school friend of mine in summer 1984 in a flame red 1975 version of the 412i. Foolishly, he called me to say that the key had snapped (as you described) after the car had stalled and he was stuck in the outside lane of the North Circular just approaching the Great Cambridge roundabout in north London. He had recently bought the car for £5k from a dealer in Harringay and was taking the car to a mate's garage to have the carbs balanced as the engine was running too rich.

I was there in short while, looked at the problem and had a brain wave; I took a flat screwdriver placed it into the lock where the key had broken and turned the lock and it got the car started again. Unfortunately, I took the screwdriver with me and followed him in my car.

A few miles down the road, I just could not bear to follow him as the smoke coming out of the Ferrari’s exhausts was so bad. At a red set of lights somewhere in Highgate on the Archway Road I drew upside him and noticed that flames were coming out of the engine. The flames grew larger as he was not able to switch the engine off (as I had the screwdriver!). Needless to say it took two fire engines to put the thing out. I then had to tow him to the garage, but the car was a write-off!

No doubt, there were a few lessons to be learnt; least of which was: don't ask for help from a Lambo loving friend when you are in dire straits with your Ferrari!
