Maserati Biturbo and similar - Information?
Discussion
Howdo chaps, Ive been looking around at Maseratis and first off, no...Im not in a position to buy one, but wouldn't mind stashing some pennies and consider buying one later on.
What Im after is knowledge on the Biturbo and other varients of the same style an era
Ive always thought it best to build a good knowledge base and do your research before doing anything so here I am
What can you tell me
Many thanks
Scott

Don't do it!! Or at least if you really, really have to have one, buy a later model (post 1989/90 I think). I had an 88 Biturbo Spyder which was non fuel injected and was basically the most badly built, unreliable car I have ever owned. Had it for almost 2 years and it was a dog. Cannot imagine the intervening 18 years since I sold it have done it many favours. Talking to the various Maserati mechanics I came to know on first name terms during its many trips to be repaired, my experience was pretty typical.

That's a pretty definitive "NO" then
Not a good start

Sorry to be so down on them!! I loved it on the rare occasions it actually worked. The big problem wasn't so much the electrical glitches (wipers, windows etc would just stop working), but the engine management 'computer' which had a mind of its own and caused untold (and seemingly unfixable) problems.

I wouldnt mind a test drive though

i owned a biturbo uk spec 2.5 litre coupe for a few years. proportionate to the cost of the car they can cost a hell of a lot to keep running. i bought it when i was 19 for 5700 quid and my first bills were about 2.5k. that was after buying a car in pretty good shape!
the fuel injected ones seem better that was 89 model on g reg in the Uk. had 2.8 litre engine. they are easy to tell apart, grill, mirrors changed etc.
i would say go for one of those - i still like the spyder (convertible) or else get a ghibli. i had a 2 litre 306 hp italian spec version of the ghibli that never caused any problems (aside from occasional very scary handling)

I had a 430 with the 2.8 motor. Fabulous car.
I asked for opinions before I bought it, including that of a friend who owned a Bora, Merak and others. 9 out of 10 cats tried hard to put me off. Only one bloke, a garage owner, had driven one regularly and praised it to high hell. He was also the only person of those asked that had actually driven a Biturbo. I bought it and loved it. Have to say though, plod were always pulling me in it for some weird reason.
My sage advice: buy a well sorted good example that's in use and has the documented history. Mechanically they're very good. Great auto box or manual Getrag. Brake discs are a tad pricey. Exhaust expensive. Fuel lines corrode. Diffs leak and turbos are a bugger to change unless you drop the motor on the subframe. Oh yeah, and the clock gets nicked always!
Buy one, and blame me.
