Hi guys, the search/hunt goes on and on. I'm now split 3 days between 328/348/355 however it's just trying to find a good condition car at the right price that I want now.

Anyway, back to the point - if I do opt for a 348 are any of you guys available to do an inspection. I think one of you 'volunteered' talkwrench before biggrin - where are you all based?

If I buy a 348 it's almost certain I'll buy private, which is where you guys could come in handy??!!!!!!

If I stick my neck out for a 355 I may go for the one at Rardley instead of Verdi, but not comfortable spending this much with no backup reserve.

The only place I'd get a 328 from is walkersport, but someone pipped me to the perfect 328 there whilst i was away on hols, and it may be a while before another low mileage '89 comes in.

Thanks,

Shiraz

Hello chap,

I have been reading your posts with interest. The whole, "will he, won't he saga" - love it. Reminds me of when I was a young blade. Here is my opinion, for what it is worth, and I what I told my son recently, who was in a similar position. Buying a Ferrari privately can be fraught with hidden issues that can only become apparent at a stage when it is too late. Many of the cars that seem like bargains or cracking buys, rarely are. The real bargains are when buying a minter from an owner who needs to get out of the car quick - bid low and you could be on to a winner. Or buy a mint car and sell it a year later for similar money, always appealed to me personally. Regardlesss, these cars are expensive to maintain and any purchase should be done with eyes wide open. E.g. there was a silver F355 with blue leather for sale at Walkersport recently. It was for sale privately forever. Fairly priced it was at £29k: bearing it mind it had patchy service history, could have been clocked early in it's life, the rear butresses needed spraying, other scabby bits of bodywork, rusty sill covers, and neeeding a pair of tyres soon, plus more. All of a sudden that is a car that could owe somebody £35k potentially and is an undesireable colour combo, and a complete pain in the arse to resell. I say could, not will. Based on your posts, I think you are in the throws of 'Ferrari fever' (which is great fun). However, many of us have had to look at 5-10 cars before finding the right one. Most private owners will not turn around and say, "yes it is rusty cos it was probably stacked at some point" on the phone. Based on your newbie Fezza status I would say whatever car you select privately make sure you get a trade PPI. Get the car up in the air, and let a professional check it out. And if an owner won't travel to have their car PPI'd then so be it. There are other cars out there. Bottom line is any issues it flags up you can use to negotiate. And the owner may be more receptive to deal. Many of us here feel we are knowledgeable enough to buy without assistance, me included, but I feel you should go the PPI route based on your posts. Or buy from a reputable dealer.

Personally,I would say buy what you can afford to maintain worse case scenario and you will be within your limits/piece of mind etc. And on that score, 328's can rust more easily than a 348, yet a 348 can prove more troublesome than a 328 as they are a that bit more complex mechanically/electronically. Not the 348's fault - evoloution that's all smile Now here is where it gets controversial - buy a 348 man! You are a young buck - the 328 is for the more mature crowd I feel. Buy a 348, fit a set of 360 alloys and a bonkers sports exhaust and enjoy! Look at Angelis's car - if that does not induce trouser movement, nothing will.

If the chaps you have asked are not available you could consider Shiltech or Peter Higgins in Loughborough, or possibly Nick Cartwright in Matlock (though he sells cars too) to do an inspection. I believe they will travel but will charge time and mileage.

Shiltech have done a fab job fixing our car and Peter Higgins is a highly recommended indy too.

And yet I bought both my 348s privately, only looking at one other (although I rejected a lot on paper/monitor).

The first one I had no inspection as it had impeccable credentials... the second and current one I had my long standing friend and ex- classic car restorer (Ferrari, Aston, Lamborghini, Jensen, Porsche and the like) Talkwrench inspect with a fine toothcombe.

Buying from a dealer may give a feeling of security but they don't have the monopoly on good cars smile

Agreed, but I feel the OP, not you or I, would struggle going down the route we would do, based on reading his previous posts. I am not suggesting buying form a main dealer, but a bit of hand holding from the likes of Walkersport may be a good thing in this instance.

Ha, didn't know my search was attracting attention wink

Anyway, that's the second time I've been called young in a fortnight - although the other was by a rather nice lady I met on the train smile Admittedly I am reaching that landmark 30th, so that's probably made the ferrari itch hworse! Thanks for the 'fatherly' advice and voice of experience, appreciated.

In terms of an inspection - I've spoken to Tim / Walkersport on the phone, and going by others recommendations, talkwrenchs abilities seem to be highly regarded as well - if I go the 348 route.

I did my homework on that particular silver/blue 355 - and knew many things before even thinking about going to view it - and someone pipped me to that as well (Spoke to both Tim, the previous owner, and a couple of people that went to view it). For whatever reason, I have warmed more to Mike at Rardley than Karl/Verdi, however both come across as very knowledgable. I just don't want to overstretch, so although the 355 is a pipedrem, realistically it's a 328 or a 348. The 348 definitely appeals in style and shape (hey, I'm even warming to the backlights - just dont like the spider and the gtb/gts are hens teeth!), however I rather like the classic and slightly cheeky/magnum appearance of the 328. Swings and roundabouts...
Ideal cars would be:
- 88/89 328 GTS - sub 35k miles
- 92/93 348 TS/TB - sub 35k miles

Anyway, have overcome the choice of 911 vs exige vs ferrari, and know I've gone through the motions of which model(s), at least the experince of hunting around for ages is teaching me a thing or two, and I can afford to wait. Just ironically I'm carless at the mo, (well old car is in storage - fiat coupe - and yes its red), at least I'm getting fit in meantime.

We'll see where I end up - I've spoken to 'robinredbrest' on this forum and he's in a similar position/conundrum to me as well...

P.S. The dream/rare 348 is on sale on PH at the mo but way outta my budget - GT Competizione.

I also considered a 328/308 when I was last looking, purely for the drop dead gorgeous shape, and the last of the pre-Fiat beautiful chrome toggle switchgear on the 308s.

However, I knew I would be frustrated by the performance on a 328/08 so went for another 348.

what an excellent thread. I can only comment on the 355 aspect of ownership, they are an awesome car, the prettiest Ferrari of all time IMO, but if the 355 is at the top of your budget limit, then dont buy as it WILL cost north of £5k PA to maintain properly, no question.Mine actually cost £7k, but I am a bit of a perfectionist and wanted every last little item corrected.

328 is the best looking car between it and the 348 (sorry Sy/Al) and it also has a bit of a bulletproof reputation ba the dreaded rot stories for poorly cared for/repaired cars.

Whichever way, enjoy, nice position to be in. smile

Shiraz, whichever model you get make sure you get a PPI done witha compression check. Even if you buy the car from your best mate.

I'm not a mechanic, so unfortunatly can't help you out on that. Although if your looking at a car I don't mind coming along with you and looking it with you. I'll email you my number. Feel free to contact me.

Firstly, many thanks to everyone for their help and advice over the last few months, especially the PHr's, and special mention also goes to Tim at Walkersport and Mike at Rardley for their open and friendly approaches. clap

Well after a long long search for the 'right' car I woke up this morning with a mixture of nervousness and excitement - I finally did it - picking up the 'new' car soon!

Spoke to John Pogson at Italia Autosport yesterday and I'll be collecting the 1993/1995 348 TS in two weeks. On all accounts it comes across as a rather special well looked after car with the odd Pogson/AutoSport 'tweak'.

On countdown already...!! biggrin

Congratulations - love the 348 looks rather special.

I hope you use it as intended - I have been very lucky to have been in the company of quite a few 348's at recent meets and have to say that the lines, noise and poise really make it a worthy Fcar, enjoy safely.

Kindest regards Aamir

Nice one ... I do hope you got it for a good price though as your are going to have another big bill if, as I suspect from those tail pipes, it doesn't have a Tubi biggrin

And do not listen to anyone who says you don't need one, or that you can get cheaper ones that are just as good. There is no better combo for the 348 than de-catted Tubi ... just as there is no better for a 355 than de-catted Capristo smile

Personally, not the colour best suited to the shape, though Grigio Titanium would be quite nice.

But if you buy cheap to allow for the colour then you can afford to sell cheap.

Just back from Italy and I noticed my name mentioned! (and yes, I did visit Ferrari... smile )
Looks like a tidy car you've found yourself. 348's really are great cars that just grow on you more and more. Never seen one with two air vents in the front before!
If I can ever be of assistance, only too pleased to help. Oh, and Al is absolutely right about the Tubi yes

Silver is terrible for resale. Lancasters had an absolutely perfect 16k mile 355 and it took them forever to get rid of it!

I've seen pics of one or two, (they're very rare), and I read an explanation as to why they were like that, but having just polished-off a bottle of Pomerol the story escapes me right now!

I wonder... could one save money on a red 355 by buying a silver one and having it resprayed?
