Haven't posted on here for a very long time but I thought I should give other 3200GT owners a heads up. I noticed a slight smell of oil/petrol a few days ago and got 15 miles less to the tank than normal so I was keeping a check on things. I phoned my local garage and they advised me to bring the car in for them to look at. The car had been sat for a couple of days and my husband took it in and the smell was a bit worse.

The garage found that the tyre well had filled up with petrol due to a fault with one of the pumps in the fuel tank, submerging my CD changer etc in petrol. They had to pump gallons out of the tyre well (a quarter to half a tank). The boot is "petrol tight" and there was not much of a smell but what surprises me most is that a faulty pump could cause the petrol to leak into the boot in the first place.

Thankfully my husband doesn't like to listen to music or who knows.

Wow, that's crazy. Did they say it was a one-off or has it been known to happen with these cars?

Sounds like a one-off - I've never heard of it before.

But if it can happen, then it might well be regarded as a design flaw.

Got the car back late yesterday and there is not much of a smell left. Got a new pump, new sound proofing and carpet sorted. I collected my electronic bits in a box and they are totally ruined but hey it's a good reason to update the system. My husband was wondering if I was trying to murder him but since it's me that has the most life insurance and it's my car, I wonder, maybe that's why he didn't put the music on whereas I always do....

It doesn't go to a main dealer but to an enthusiast and he has never seen anything like it in any car. He was so shocked that he advised us to go home and open a bottle of wine as we were lucky to be here.

IS it worth doing a survey here or over at maseratiforum? If there is more than one we could report to maserati to promote a recall ? frown

Sounds nasty, and very lucky!!

I had a similar experience with my Cerbera the other week. I had come back from a fortnights holiday and I took the cerb out to the gym. On the way onto the A42 I said to the wife "can you smell petrol?" and she said she could, but we assumed it was just fumes because it had been stood for a couple of weeks (I drive it every day normally).

Anyway, the smell went away as we drove up to the M1. When we got to the gym (at the Hilton on M1 J24) and we stopped at the barrier I said "Jesus, it stinks of fuel now!". I parked up and opened the bonnet to find that the high pressure fuel hose that runs over the top of the engine had split and it was squirting fuel all over the engine and alternator.

We had just driven at least 10 miles with it pumping fuel all over the big V8!!. I couldn't believe it hadn't gone up in a big fireball on the way.

Anyway, I've always fancied a Maser and I'm working on getting a 3200. I'll have to check the boot for funny smells on any I look at now. I don't fancy pushing my luck on a potential firey death again, lol!

Thanks for all your concern and we realise we were lucky. I hope it's just a one off but if not that others read this and check the tyre well so they don't find themselves in the same situation. Volospian your situation sounds awful and very dangerous, glad you are both okay.

I have heard from a couple of other owners about checking the fuel lines because of leaks. I had to jump start the car before I drove off and it wasn't leaking then, so it just went randomly. Worried me a bit, I can tell you!

Luckily I decided to take the car to the gym that day as the next day I was driving it 40 miles or so to PPC in Melton. That could have seen a much higher chance of the fuel igniting!!

It's one of those "near misses", like if you had decided to listen to a cd. That could have been terrible!!

Still, I hope you are enjoying the maser. I've fancied a 3200 for ages. The cerb is a lot of fun, but I hanker after something a bit more refined, lol.
