...........driving up a fastish A road...came accross a new M5 "making progress"....stuck behind him for a little while , 30 seconds or so (as an aside HOW MUCH crap do M5's throw up at speed - must be some sort of venturi effect combined with the wide tyres - more pepper spray damage to the front of the car from 30 seconds behind an M5 than the preceding 6000 miles of fast A and B road work! GRRRR! ) - anyway "made progress" past the M5 and then just as I passed him - BANG - then whoosh and whirr then screech - then silence - then tinkle tinkle!! all from the off side front.............at first I thought blow out - then maybe a bolt in the tyre?.......bit further along the road car seems to be behaving normally other than the "tinkling" noise??.....get to the next intersection and pull off for a look in a Parking area.......can't see anything at all?...strange....so carry on to my parents house - we pop the car onto a kerb and lift the suspension - then put wheel on full lock - WOW - what a mess!

Bascially what has happened is that there is a large 3" bore flexible hose (the spiral wound type with steel wire in it to keep it rigid) that ducts cooling air from the front lower intakes and directs it into the rear of the brake discs - it is routed from the lower front of the wheel arch, over the top of the suspension arms and then into the rear of the hub carrier at the top, and mine has come off at high speed and got wrapped around the front drive shaft!!

The wire in the hose has wrapped REALLY tightly around the plastic remnants and filled the length of the drive shaft - damaging the front CV boot into the bargain. The "tinkling" noise was a couple of the loose ends of the wire spinning round and hitting the lower wishbone.

I've been REALLY lucky....the wire is quite a decent thickness/guage and if the hose and wire had wrapped around the steering control arms (which are an inch or so away), or even one of the wishbones, as well as pulling round the driveshaft it could have been very nasty indeed......I was also lucky it didn't take out the brake hose/pipe (it has loosened them from their clips).

Bit of a poor design frankly.........seeing as it seems to be held in place with a jubilee clip at each end and a zip-tie!

So thanking all the Italian Saints tonight...........but who said Audification is going to be a bad thing??....not me anymore that's for sure!

New underpants for one? smile

Hopefully it's not a big job to sort, glad you got out of it relatively unscathed.

Those hoses are a really bad design issue.
The ones on my Diablo get squashed when the front wheels are turned on hard lock.

Wow. Sounds nasty.

Any pics?

Agree with you re: the amount of junk an M5 throws up. Following a 997 turbo is exactly the same. Loads of heat and gravel in your mush!

Good to see Lamborghini design has evolved over the last 20 years! biggrin

I had a very similar thing happen on my Countach with the spiral type brake cooling hose disintegrating and the wire inside hitting the brake discs and inside of the wheel. I really thought something was seriously wrong from the horrible noise it made, but I couldn’t understand why the car still felt normal to drive until I got home to take a look at it.

I'm amazed that both you and dealmaker heard "horrible noises" and yet carried on driving!
Don't either of you have RAC cover?

Handy hint, if you hear a dodgy noise, pull over...

........errm...........if you read the original post I indicated that I pulled over as soon as was practicable/safe - about 400 metres (I knew it was chassis component/or tyre/wheel related related - not engine) and checked usual issues - Tyre, wheel, brake discs, caliper, caliper backing plate etc. - I then determined that it was safe to continue a short distance to a point where a full inspection was possible.

I'm very glad all was well. I'd be inclined to junk the flexi hose and have them fabricated in aluminium. Just have the flexi at the ends that need to move. Got fed up years ago tearing them off race cars.

Yes I thought “that sounds as if it something’s completely f**cked and going to cost £££££ but nevermind I’ll just carry on driving for a while.” rolleyes

Of course I stopped and checked and phoned up a specialist for advice. But as there was nothing to see and it felt fine to drive there was not much I could do in terms of investigation until I got it home (about 10 miles driven very slowly and carefully).

Glad to hear that you're okay - and the car is fixable. God bless the italians - but you know we love 'em!

yes indeed............the GT2 and CGT went in anticipation of something very special arriving that I "had a deal" on....funny how some peoples ideas of " a deal" differ to mine and so it did not come to pass unfortunatley....Hey Ho......should have kept the CGT..........never mind.....

....so today I am mainly looking at buying a FGT and tuning it to an inch of it's life!
