So what are they going for?
I have seen the PH classifieds, ebay and autotrader but what are they actually selling at?
Whats cheap?
Someone here bought a 1999 car for £30k from auction.I have seen the PH classifieds, ebay and autotrader but what are they actually selling at?
Whats cheap?
Car is perfect - I bought a new 'S50 FES' plate for £250, and it is having a full cambelt service from our local Indy, so including new belts and plate it will cost me about £33k. I'm quite happy with that.
Cap is way out as so few 550's are in circulation. The main problem is finding any 550 owners who understand that their car is worth a lot less than it was last year. Comparing mine to others out there, it would appear similar ones are £10k overpriced. However there is a 97 up at Blackbushe on monday, that I understand has no documents. I rerckon it will go for mid 20's, so that may be a bargain for the brave!

Still think you got a bargain, and that 33k in a 550 is as sound an investment as anything else at the the moment. Just watched the latest Top Gear on iPlayer and maybe, just maybe, the 550 is the next 365 GTB/4......
all I've got to do now is convince the missus of my (slightly unsound) logic

Hope all is good with the 550.
Cheers
Johnny

Thats why I posted in first place.Normally their cap prices are about right. But 16-20k is a bit low which is what got the juices flowing.I like a good risk!
How much for the following,
cambelt service,
clutch
pads and discs,

Clutch - not sure, but my Indy reckons they're really tough and they've never needed to change one.
Pads - around £200 a set from Eurospares; Discs - about £400 a set from Eurospares.

A cambelt service, MOT plus the usual bits and pieces on a 550 is easily £4k - don't forget airbags need changing at 10 years old.
Once you factor in a new set of tyres, some larini back boxes ( to give it that proper ferrari v12 sound)and an ipod compatable hi-fi it is easy to spend £8k on an already mint car with a full history.
These are great cars which create a real sense of occasion when driving but they are not cheap to run. £1 per mile seems about par for the course.
As to value that is rather tricky - cars are only worth what people are willing to pay but for that you need a willing seller and very few owners are prepared to sell them for £30k.
An auction or a distressed sale sounds like the way to get a good deal - good luck
Have a good look at the history and do your research as these cars seem prone to clocking which I noticed when looking for mine.

where do they wear? Can you tell by seat bolsters carpet wear, do steering wheels wear.do they look shot blasted behind wheels etc what about corrosion?
Andy,
I guess you're looking at this as something special to use as well as your current gem?
Hopefully you're not getting rid of it?
The 550 is a lovely looking car, and looking at the prices at the moment clearly a very under-rated one. It will be a good foil for the other car, decent performance, good looks and mile munching capabilities.
There are plenty of decent independents that I can recommend to you to look after it so servicing and maintenance costs should not be too horrific.
I'm not sure if this one has the handling pack which I've heard transforms the car.
It is always going to be a risk buying from an auction but if you get a good one it will be a keeper.

The cars which I saw had been clocked were given away by their service history - one owner told me about his lenghy euro trip in the summer which made the service history/MOT (as far as I can remember) incorrect as they showed virtually no mileage across the same period.
The second car just had the usual slightly worn drivers pedals, bolster worn and slightly saggy seat - there were some missing service receipts which made me very suspicious as regards the stamped up book. Gut feeling I guess.
The strange thing was that the car I bought (32k) looked by far the freshest in terms of interior.
If you drive a few you wil note that they drive fairly differently with some being much more powerful and/or taut than others.
The cars do suffer from corrosion despite them being ally although nothing very bad - if you look at the leading edge of the bonnet (motor side) you may see a fair bit of bubbling - most of them seem to suffer that way but if it has been well repaired it does give you a good idea of the standard of maintenance.
I would go through the electrics in some detail as it is expensive to sort out things - check the air con (don't belive that old recharge cobblers) as the compressors do go and they are expensive. The cars seem prone to go through suspension actuators (? word) and a suspension warning light normally indicates one or more needs to be replaced. Have a look at the dash leather as it can shrink near the screen.
Have fun but choose wisely as I imagine a poor one would cost a fortune to put right.

I am after something for daily use, that I can do lots of miles with, and so I can stop saying "depends on the weather" every time there is a meet or event.I guess you're looking at this as something special to use as well as your current gem?

No wont part with the Gem..... Just add to it.wouldnt mind another, that has more mileage and is scrufier and that I could take to the ring and Le mans etc, without being concerned about clocking up miles or getting it wet.
That sounds like a horror story to me. £4k and £8k services on a mint car?? Is that the norm? I'm looking at a few cars as well (550 being one of them) and I'm hearing all sorts of things when it comes to running costs. I've learnt the hard way to pay more for a good car from the outset to avoid big bills but but sounds like the V12 will never be 'cheap' to own.
I plan to use mine mainly for longer trips with only 4-5k miles a year - realistically I'd be amazed/horrified if I was paying 4-8 a year for the privilige.
Any one else with info on running costs would be appreciated.

1) Does anybody know what the '97 silver 550 went for at Blackbushe today plz?
2) There was some mention earlier in the thread of a cheap car that one of the forumites recently bought at auction. I wonder if this refers to the 2 cars sold by Brightwells in the summer. One was a red car on a '97 or '98 plate, the other was a silver car on an '01. If the car referred to happens to be the silver '01 car, then the buyer may wish to pm me as I have some information on the car that might be of interest. I had an inspection report done on it by a local Ferrari specialist and was very close to tying up a deal for the car before somebody else swooped at the last minute

I spent all the money getting mine up to scratch when I bought it 3 years ago. So this year has only cost me less than £400 including the mot. Spent more than that on fuel taking it to Le Mans I plan to use mine mainly for longer trips with only 4-5k miles a year - realistically I'd be amazed/horrified if I was paying 4-8 a year for the privilige.

It's due the belts again next time, and I'll do the tensioners this time as well. I notice the Lambda sensors are due now, but I'll wing them for a while. Airbags? Sounds like main dealer talk to me.As for future classic in the Daytona mould - guarranteed.
