Gents,

I wish I was asking this question for myself, but unfortunately a life of making the wrong career decisions means it's unlikely to happen.

But a friend of mine is considering either of these cars - 430 or Gallardo - (both in spider form) as a purchase in the new year. He's looking at used examples and was wondering how they would compare in terms of running costs over, say, a 2 year ownership period?

He wouldn't be doing many miles in either, and if it was just a matter of a few 100 pounds, it wouldn't be an issue. But if one would be - in your considered opinions - much cheaper to run than the other, it could be the swaying factor.

Many thanks in advance.

Gallardo all the way, so much more of an event, proper supercar stuff!

But to be fair you just have to drive them and see which you prefer.

Running costs are neither here nor there, it's depreciation you have to worry about and you're going to get spanked badly on either.

If you can accept that, then take a test drive.

I have pointed out that depreciation will be the killer - I'm trying to point him towards a nice 360, but he's not having it!

I wouldn't imagine there would be much of a difference in running costs between them. s already said, the biggest thing to worry about is depreciation. Which at the moment is horrendous.

He's gonna spend upwards of 80 grand on a car and the deciding factor is the running costs??? They are very different cars to drive, tell him to go drive both and buy the one he prefers.

surprisingly different cars to drive
your friend has to drive as many miles in each as he can, which is a terrible hardship
then he'll find that the lambo is just so much more of a surreal event and join the darkside
eta it's ferrari spider, lamborghini spyder smile

Having test driven both this weekend, I would say the Gallardo - at least that's the way I'm going smile

Both very different cars in many ways (starters being 2wd v 4wd) needs to drive each to decide.
Running costs on Lambo I think would be higher in the long term but you will manage to buy a newer Gallardo for your money compared to F430 Spider.
Factory warranty on Ferrari is from 07/07 cars 4 years unlimited miles as against 3 years on Lambo.
If using Lambo for long weekends away will need to send bags on ahead as no room but F430 will take plenty.

The 2wd / 4wd is a good point.

I don't like having things that cost this sort of money and not using them so I like to use mine all year round, hence the Gallardo being 4wd is much better in this respect.

In my 360 the traction control was flashing all the time in winter and killing the engine, very annoying.

Its such a personal choice in many ways, I tried both and went 430...cant really put my finger on why as the lambo is a fantastic car also. Ive since driven the lambo again and am pleased with the decision I made. Its really a heart choice isnt it? What gives YOU more of a sense of occasion to drive...what have you dreamt of owning etc. I actually think the Lambo is more usable, not just the 4wd (that said i used mine in the bad weather recently and it was ok for the most part) but also I think its not quite as obvious as a ferrari. Clearly this is a little colour dependant but it just doesnt seem as big and 'in your face' in many ways whereas the ferrari just seems like a really large car....maybe this is just me?
Both are depreciating horribly, both are expensive to own, but both are brilliant so its not a bad choice to have.

Oh and I think the F1 change is better than the e gear...puts tin hat on and runs...

I was in this postion, tried both and went Gallardo (only lasted four weeks though) - chalk and cheese to drive, personal preference will dictate which he buys - he'll know within 500 yards of driving. Watch out for the luggage space in the G car -- its almost non existant - which makes even an overnight trip a bit difficult (this hits home after a couple of weeks...)

I have found the posts about the luggage space quite interesting but it doesn't put me off buying a G. I used to own an MR2 Roadster and for anyone who has ever gone anywhere for more than a weekend you have to be very 'creative' with the luggage. The 'glove boxes' behind the seats fill up quite quickly and the front 'bin' could fit a couple of bags of shopping. One thing I used to do if I was desperate was to keep the roof up (soft or hard-top) and put stuff on the shelf and with the passenger leg room being rather large; place a wide shallow bag under the passengers knee area.

IIRC, there's a vid on YouTube of an American curled up in the front of a G or Murcie. I hope it was in the M because I would HATE to find a Yank stowed away in my car!!! *Shudder*

There isn't one in a Spyder.

Out of interest Polar, why did it only last 4 weeks?

it was in fact the luggage issue (we just couldnt use it at weekends to go away) and the fact my wife refused to be seen anywhere near it -- her or car.... yes, I know... got a DBS instead, ladies love the astons everybody's happy (shafting on price aside).

Whats all this clothing related gubbings nonsense. Basing a car purchase on whether 'er in doors can fit an extra pair of shoes in the car indeed?

By the lord harry, I thought this was pistonheads? not gok.com?

G spyder all the way for Mr & Mrs Blot biggrin

Though have to say the DBS is a beautiful looking tin top
