I'll try and get him to join PH, but in the meantime I wonder if someone could help.

Once warm, and at idle and out of gear (it's an auto) the rpm varies from 800 to 1000, in a very regular up and down pattern.

What should he be checking/cleaning/changing, or is it a case of 'they all do that sir'?

Thanks.

"they (almost) all do that sir"

Lot's of discussion on this topic on http://www.maseratiforum.co.uk - your friend should be able to find a few suggestions on there to help fix (or at least minimise) this "feature".

Of course, it's only really a problem if it's an automatic and very slippery on the roads - at least it never snows badly and then freezes in the UK ... D'oh :-)

These guys http://www.digitaltuning.ch/

I actually had it done in Italy as I was in the area at the time. They were happy to make the mods and let me try it out. If I didn't like it they'd put it back to normal for no charge. However, it only took a few minutes for me to be convinced. A bit more of everything but the fact that it smoothed things out was a big bonus.

Thanks! Looks really interesting.

It says on the website that the chip will get 23 extra hp and 87 extra Nm.

Just for 1k euro.

Shame there's no UK dealer.

Sounds like classic throttle pot problems, try the throttle reset detailed on maserati forum, and clean every electrical connection you can see! Lots of info on the forum.

...thanks for the replies.

We have done the throttle min/max 'reset', and it has made no difference to the warm idle variation.

It did make a large difference to the throttle sensitivity, so he's pleased about that!

I'm almost a total noob to these 3200s, but from what I've read, quite a few cars needed throttle bodies replacing.
