I've got one and owned three 997's (C2,C2S & turbo). The GT is a totally different car and can't be compared to a 997 on anything but price I guess. It's a lot bigger, heavier and unless you go for the S comes with an auto box only. It's a fantastic long distance cruiser with good comfort, decent range from it's large fuel tank and has genuine space for four people (but not if they are all 6' or above). The 997 is far more agile on cross country A and B roads but put the GT into sport mode and it can be quite entertaining though it does feel it's size. In terms of looks and sound the Maserati walks away with the victory. Build quality is good but routine servicing costs will be higher than the Porsche. There are some minor gripes - bluetooth wasn't available on the first years production and the TMC system doesn't work as Maserati apparently haven't paid for a UK licence (pretty crap for a car in this price range IMHO). Prices appear to have stabilised on used cars with only odd colour combo's or poorly spec'ed cars dropping down below £60k retail. If you are looking for a practical sports car get the 997. If you want an elegant grand tourer with a bit more exclusivity and subtle style get the Maserati.

Cheers for that I was looking at a 4 seater for the kids etc - looks like I might start looking.I can certainly recommend a maserati, my gransport has been bullet proof & it's a daily driver so done a fair few miles including a 3k mile pilgrimage to the factory last summer.
All the GTs are still in warranty (so fewer worries there & are a full 4 seater. That said the GS easily seats 4 adults (I can sit in the back & I'm 6'7 - with the front seat set for me to drive!) the only down side is the luggage space, which is a lot larger in the GT. I found the GT to feel large, it is indeed a big car but very comfortable.
Test drive a couple of variants & see which one you like the feel of most. The most difficult bit will be deciding on your colour scheme

Mines a gransport rather than a granturisimo so I don't know about GT options. on the GS I'd say xenons, skyhook, full leather, heated memory seats, sat nav\phone & the pleated headlining are the must have's. The rest don't really make much difference.
Mine's gregio alfieri (sparkly gun metal grey) with bordeaux (dark wine red) full leather & grey carpets. It truely is fab looking. The bordeaux rarely photographs well so go see it in the flesh - same goes for all the reds to be honest. They normally look bright & brash in pics.
pm me if you want any more info.
