Ok I'm looking at a 308 GT4 (car is in Asia and I live there.) car is on the road running, and has had major engine work and runs stops as it should. I can get body and trim done at the right price, Car is for sale through a specialist and price is right. The ignition system has been changed, but all original parts come with the car.
Wife is on board and I'm now planning a serious visit with the cash in my pocket, and plan to buy. I’ve never had a Ferrari, I am mechanically experienced and the car is well up to standard when looked at using general second hand car criterion, e.g. service history, no leaks etc and I am happy I have the general knowledge to asses a car purchase, specialist inspection services are not an option here, so what should I look for on this model and, what can I use to get the price down?
Thanks Kel

There are a few owners on www.clubscuderia.com and a dedicated 308/328 section on the www.ferrarichat.com forum.

I think your query would be much better answered there.

Hope you enjoy it!

I had one for a while.

Look for full service history and check the air cond works.

Some had issues of jumping out of first gear, or so I was told, but I had no issues with mine.

I loved it. They are a bit ugly but a good entry level Ferrari / Dino.

Not particularly fast but the sound of the exhause etc at circa 3,000 revs upwards is addictive and they corner very well.

Good luck!

They rust from the inside out, don't underestimate the extent of corrosion by the time you see it on outer panels.

Make sure the elecrics work, windows are notorious and a/c as has been said, diffs can get noisy with lack of use, it's just the friction plates in the lsd but it's not that cheap to fix.

Oh and I believe rear shocks can seize if it hasn't had much use, unless you're used to them it may seem ok, mine handled like a go-kart which I liked until someone pointed out the back end was solid! Ahem....

The only other grief I had was a fore/aft coolant pipe failing which is a drag to repair properly (i.e. with metal pipes) as the engine needs to be lifted to give clearance, but you can use reinforced rubber hoses.

Mine never had any problems selecting second gear when cold either, they don't HAVE to have that "feature".

Should be cheap as chips at the moment, cracking cars and a load of fun to drive.
