Driving home from work last night, noticed I was low on fuel, the light was on but only very recently on - indicating around quarter of a tank. Slowing in traffic, slipping into first gear the car died, was passing a bus stop at the time so just coasted in. Restarted and everything was fine, filled the car with petrol and has been back to normal, no warning lights etc.

Never had this happen before but I've never had it so low on fuel before either.

Is this normal behaviour?

similar thing happened to me once, but fortunately as I was reversing in to my drive at the time.
Headed straight to fill up, and never had the same problem again.

(I find the fuel gauge on the Gallardo somewhat deceptive, so never let it drop beyond the half way mark).

This is a very common problem with Gallardo's. Ours cuts out shortly after the fuel light comes on. Murcie's arent the same and keep going for ever on empty

it's a well-known gallardo foible
mine did a slight variation : fuel light comes on, drive maybe 20 miles, fill-up, fine
half a mile later it cut out
restarted first time and has been fine ever since

Had the reverse to all of you so far.
Fuel light comes on, shows 80-90 miles in the tank. I can then drive it to show 5 miles or even zero, then fill up. Never had it cut out.

I ran out two weeks ago on the M4, range displayed 40 miles but it died, much to the amusement of every Ferrari driver heading out of London at 8:00am!

Most owners try and keep it filled above half a tank. There is a pipe which joins both tanks together. If the fuel gets low enough only 1 tank will fuel the engine effectivly halving the amount of fuel you have.

How low do you have to get before this happens? I have run the car down to showing 0 miles left and it still didn't cut out.

Is this a Gallardo 03-05 problem is does it affect the 06MY onwards? Is it a coupe only problem?

general consensus is don't drive once the low level warning is on ( ie 20-25% according to the dial )

Me too .. always running it down to virtually zero on the computer and hasn't cut out yet.
