I know this probably isn't the right section to post in but i wasn't quite sure where else to post.

Anyway i was just wondering what were they like to drive? Were they a bit like old corvettes (didn't understand corners)? Is there many of them in the UK?

Thanks

Rather unlikely to handle like any Corvette, as Panteras were mid-engined and the Corvette front-engined.

I would say this is a good forum to ask on.

There's a chap on here who is a mind of information on the Pantera's and, from memory, has one of the most stunning examples around. Again, from memory I think his name was something like 'SteveIrl' or similar.

If he's still on here, I'm sure he'll be along in a sec....

If you are seriously considering buying Pantera I really do suggest you join the DTDC, for the £80 fee you will find that almost all the cars in the UK are known about and honestly if they aren’t it is probably best to stay well clear as even now you hear of horror stories of people being drawn in to buying seemingly cheep cars only to find they have a garage full of filler and rust.

If there is something specific you have seen drop me a private email and I will see what I know about the car and if not I know a man that will in all likelihood.

As previously mentioned a Pant is absolutely nothing like driving Vette and do remember the Pant is now a very old car in its original incarnation and whilst great fun to drive needs to be treated with considerable respect particularly if the road is anything other than dry.

Anyhow if there is anything more specific you would like to know ask away.

I think you need to speak to Philip Stebbings. He is the guy that goes to Goodwood a lot with his orange Diablo with the XX 77 number plate.
I think he is Secretary of The De Tomaso Club.

My 2p.

Like any older car go for the best condition one you can afford.

I do believe the later GT5 & GT5S cars were of a noticeably better build quality.

Engines went from Ford's 351ci Cleveland to the less powerful Windsor.

Last model was the Pantera Si, around 80 made and command top money as do mint 5S's.

Join the De Tomaso Drivers Club, great bunch with many meets and an excellent quarterly full colour magazine, a godd pantera is like nothing else to drive and an absolute blast with one of the best soundtracks ever. Phil Stebbings and Roger Brotton are the two head men in the club. Look at the site for contact info.
Any other questions, only too happy to answer.

Woolfrace wheels as well I think!

Whilst it’s a long time ago might this have been a V6 version? Back when there were one or two, one subsequently being converted back over to V8 power and all the body add-ons and its now for sale via the DTDC

If you fancy a slightly tweaked Pantera have a look at the example at "Bob's Affordable Classics" just off the M42 J5

Apparently it has a 9.5 litre engine pushing out 850bhp and should you be brave enough to try, will do 220mph!! All yours for £95k

Its painful, truly painful!

It attended the most recent Auto Italia gathering at Brooklands and looked absolutely phenomenal and each and every time you see it never ever ceases to amaze. Whilst I’m bound to be biased it was about the best example of any marque present that day in humble opinion.

It didn’t attend the annual concourse leaving the way clear for well trained judge (yours truly) to award the coveted silverware to a Daihatsu Charade DeTomaso ( there was such a thing) although I must confess it was lacking some of the sparkle of the ‘Woods Pantera’ and somebody decided to go and give it to a Pantera anyway!

I know this car and its owner well, it is an early 70's car modified to GT5 spec, but many of the panels have been replaced with lightweight c/fiber, aircon removed, racing seats, and excess inner panel metal taken out along with a host of other weight reducing measures. it is fitted with a custom built all alum. windsor stroker motor pushing 580bhp and the ZF has been modified with longer gearing. The car weighs less than 1300kg and is the fastest reliably useable Pantera in the UK, a really quick car.

Robert,

Johnny Woods won two trophies at the recent 50th anniversary meeting in Modena, one being best paint.

Here's Colin Bradshaw's very last RHD Pant GT5S, circa 1989/1990;

and not forgetting the limited production Pantera Si;
