Hey all,

I've got four stone chips on my bonnet and I'm unsure of whether to have them touched up or have the whole bonnet resprayed. The car is a G Spyder in three layer Giallo Midas. I'm guessing three layer paint is a sh!t to touch up so I was thinking of taking the plunge with a potentially costly respray. What have you done? What are the results? Can anyone recommend a good bodyshop?

Cheers,

Touch it in unless you are going to fit film over the front after painting it... I own a bodyshop & my Porsche Turbo have a few minor chips best left as is but touched in...
If your going down the touch in route , Get the main dealer to order touch in colour, .Touch in very small and over a few days keep touching it in to build up to amount you need.., If you paint it next time out it will happen again,, The shape of the car you cant stop it,,,, GOLDIE

apparantly rob at grimmaldi eng has a painter that can do three layer paint on seperate panels which match so no need to blend.

If theses a painter out there that can paint a micra pearl with out fading colour he should be on 2K a week. Owned & run my own body shop for 35 years ,, Cant be done.... If so,, Insurance company,s would not pay for fading,, They all do.. We all know how tight insurance company,s are when it comes to spending money,,, GOLDIE

Hi all, i too own a bodyshop and iam also a painter by trade i also own a gialio midas gallardo and i can confirm that the only way to paint this colour is dead panel as you will never blend it out perfectley.I know this from experiance and trial and error on my own car, this is true of most 3 stage colours,Witchbread,if you are ever in the Telford area drop me a line and you can call in to my bodyshop and i will mix you a small amount of paint so you can touch up your chips.

Not sure I get this, are the previous two posts different, Can you paint each panel seperate on 3 stage paint.

or do you blend it with other panels.

Think they are saying whole panels must be painted. I have the same issue on the murci front.

Paint chips are part of the deal if you use your car. Respray the panel and watch it chip again. I touch up. I would respray if it looks really really bad or if I was ever to put it up for resale.

I have just agreed to buy a Ferrari 360 Modena and it needs a lot of stone chip repair and some other issues.

Who is the best person to use in the Liverpool / Manchester / West Yorkshire area ?

(might also get the DB9 done if a good price can be agreed)

Thanx for your responses.

It's frustrating that the chips are all around the badge in a two feet square. There's four of them and they are down to the bodywork. I was planning on having the whole front section covered in the Paintshield/Venturshield plastic film but I'm worried that the film would bubble where the chips are. I'm favouring a respray then have it covered in film however I haven't had any quotes for respraying the bonnet yet! ;-)

FWIW, I had a stone chip in my (since sold) midas Gallardo's bonnet - through the clearbra. (This is very unusual but it happened at very high speed on a road with very sharp stones.)

Anyway, I had a painter quote on respraying it but he suggested touching up first because of the difficulty in matching with adjoining panels. After the bra was removed, he mixed some yellow with some pearl finish and touched it in. I then had a new bra installed and honestly, I had trouble finding the touch up it was that good. My depression turned to elation!

Hope this helps.

With a 3 stage colour the most important coat is the ground coat the pearl coat which goes over the top of the ground coat just gives you the effect and is almost colourless, however the more of this you apply the more the colour will change, this is why you must apply ground coat to all of the panel followed by the pearl coat one coat at a time until it matches the other panels,if you only applyed the ground coat to half of the panel and then tried to fade the pearl on top of the original paint it would turn out a differant shade as there will be twice as much pearl in that area.
It is very important that each of these coats is fully dried before the next one is applyed if it is not the paint will remain soft and will chip very easily i think this is what as happened to Diablo petes front bumper.
I hope this hasnt been to boring, hopfully it will help you understand the paint process on your cars.
