Hello
I was considering a more sensible car to our current Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV Mark 1 (1969)
and I am really keen on the Maserati 3200 but I cannot find someone who can service it in the Surrey(Godalming) area, does anybody know of anyone who could do this?
thanks in advance
best wishes
Andrew

Honestly it is!!!
Do not need to keep up with bodyworK
A couple more inches legroom for our 2 and 5 year olds
Future classic!
and the only car I can think of that will take me breath away(other than the service bills) when I hear the engine.
Other ideas were
Merc 420SL nice but tame
Alfa GT not sure if exciting enough (I love them though!)

There is only one place I would take mine, Thats Emblem in Bournemouth. http://www.emblemsportscars.com/home.aspx

A bit of a trek for you, but well worth it.

I've got a 3200 and I'm in Hindhead. I use Emblem and they are fantastic - well worth the journey.

I have only had mine a few months, I havent had to spend too much. Touch wood. It's done 16000 miles and is on it's 3rd clutch!

I dont know an awful lot about 3200's, but what I have read is that they can be extremely unreliable. But then there are some people who havent had that many problems.
All depends if you buy a good car I guess.

Have a read of the above thread and do a search. Plenty of armchair experts about who "think" they know what they are talking about many of whom I'm sure will be along to slate them shortly.
Pay heed to current and past owners experiences only. Colour combo's are a personal taste so go with what YOU like. Enjoy the moment and get an auto!

There are very cheap 3200s about. However the same applies about buying the best you can afford. I paid top dollar a year ago for a black asseto corsa 3200. One year later exluding insurance, tax, petrol, the total cost for the year was a service of £350.
I also have a lotus esprit which i bought quite cheaply but probably costs £2000 on average a year.
I should also add the lotus has also been completely reliable, they are only not so when people do not do preventative measures and drive it till it breaks.

It still looks like an option we have spent 10-20,000 on the Alfa getting it to this stage so "swings and roundabouts" enough thrill in the Maserati to make us part with the Alfa but still very hard as nothing on the road looks so good, I hate to say not even the Maserati, but the 0-60 and engine makes up for it and the Italian flair!
We are now looking for a 3200GT (Auto maybe)

Not sure if you have considered a 4200 but their values are dropping all the time and are now not much more than a 3200. I ran a 4200 for a couple of years and am now completely hooked by the whole Maser experience. True you do not get the turbo rush in the 4200 and you lose the boomerang lights but the figures show they are very evenly matched in acceleration and the 4200 has less issues and is probably the better resolved car. Main dealer servicing (I had a warranty to maintain) cost £1,200 and £1,500 for the annual and major services with a bit of additional work thrown in, which you should be able to get down considerably with a specialist.

Overall my car was very reliable and probably more so than the M5 I had previously. Worth thinking about in my view but wish you well with the search.

hi folks,

after much deliberation (and also reading the 3200/4200 related threads on here) i've taken the plunge and bought a 3200 auto. It's a 2000 model car in nero carbonio with a cherry red interior. The car was delivered last Thursday from the supplying dealer and i've got a couple of questions. 1) The gearbox on the car can be a little "clunky" when changing through the gears (if not done very carefully) at stand still with the engine just idling, is this normal? 2) Can anyone recommend a service specialist in the Manchester area? I'm only a couple of minutes away from Stratstone Manchester but would prefer perhaps to use an independant unless there's not much price difference. 3) The car has done 54000 miles, is there much likely to go wrong at this kind of mileage? Daft question really, I know!

After years of driving (very!) old Porsches this is quite a change in direction for me and i must admit to being a little disappointed in the build quality despite realising that they're not going to be as solidly put together as a Porsche. Can anyone recommend a good supplier of parts too?

Oh and last thing, the car has the standard factory silencers on it which i was thinking of changing for the RPI engineering silencers, are these ok or should I really be looking at Tubi or Larini etc?

thanks in anticipation

Congrats on your purchase. 1) Try changing the box filter and gearbox oil, as it will make the world of difference if it has not been done for a while. 2) The main Maserati specialist in your neck of the woods is Autoshield www.autoshieldmaserati.co.uk 3)Just depends on how it has been used and maintained inn the past few years. A good one won't cost a fortune to run, a bad one will! Generally though these cars do require a fair bit of tlc over the course of a year. 4) www.eurospares.co.uk for your parts requirements 5)RPI silencers are just cheap and cheerful stainless alternatives to the original crappy rear boxes. If you want to unleash the true sound of the V8 Maser engine get the Larini exhausts.

Hope that helps. Oh yes, and you may wish to join the rather excellent www.maseratiforum.co.uk as it really is a good source of info.

Thank you, that's great advice - will take the car down to Autoshield to check a few things over and get the back boxes swapped out!

Have to say initially I was having a few second thoughts as it brought back memories of when I was a kid driving old Lancia Betas and Alfa Sprints and the bloomin' things always used to just fall apart in your hands - literally ;-)

After a few years of this I managed to save enough to buy an old 911T (just five and a half grand way back then!) and got hooked.

Now at 41 I feel like i've just returned to the dark side!!
