Ok, it was part of a 'driving experience' day, which I know some of you owners don't like much.

But as I'm currently not in a position to own a Lamborghini, this is my only way to experience driving such a car (and Lambos excite me the most!).

I was booked to drive an LP640 at Thruxton (I expect some of you know the car) but when I arrived I learned that it had recently been replaced.

I have driven, also at 'experience days', amongst other cars, a Diablo and a Gallardo.
But this was even better, the noise, that is still ringing around my head, and the power of the brakes really stick in my mind, but everything about it was absolutely fantastic! cloud9

The instructor was brilliant, he allowed me to press on, but obviously nowhere near the cars limit - and I was certainly very concious of the cars' value, rarity and how the owner might have felt had I broken it!
The photos were taken earlier in the day, it was mostly very dry when I got to drive it. smile

Words can't say how much I adore this car, so I'll let some gratuitous photos do the talking!

Today was a good day! biggrin

Got an experience booked to drive that very car at Thruxton in October. Currently stuck on an ship off the coast of Japan waiting to discharge liquid gas. Even more excited now and can't wait to get home after seeing the pictures! Glad to hear they let you open her up a bit!

Yeah, it was great fun, I'm still grinning now! smile

It also helped that the staff and organisation at Thruxton were both excellent.
It was very busy with a lot of people and a lot of different things going on, but it all seems to run like clockwork.
Also the instructors (some of them quite well known drivers from BTCC and other racing categories) were all very helpful and enthusiastic, which went a long way to making it a day to remember.

For us who aren't potential supercar owners I thoroughly reccommend an 'experience day' at Thruxton, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. cool

I'm just going to check my lottery numbers now! biggrin

Why would an owner not like a driving experience day?

Thanks for the story and pics.

No probs, glad you like the pics, I must admit I'm quite pleased with how the last pic came out, and it's my new desktop background, but the subject matter made it difficult to go wrong really!

There was a thread on this forum several months ago about owners of supercars hiring them out for people like me to drive on 'experience days'.

The general opinion seemed to be that a lot of owners wouldn't want people they didn't know driving their pride and joy.

I can fully understand that, I'm nervous of people driving my twenty year old BMW, so I think I'd be exactly the same!

But I've driven about ten cars at these events now and it's clear to me that the instructors control things very well and the cars are treated with the utmost respect.
People who drove the Murcielago SV even had to wear suede gloves to preserve the alcantara steering wheel from all the grubby, sweaty hands.
So I would imagine that incidents resulting in damage are probably very rare.

I was speaking to one of the guys at Thruxton a while ago and they had looked at getting hold of a Veyron for these experience days but apparently to make it financially viable they would have had to charge something like £1k for 4 laps (!)

How old do you have to be to have one of these track day events?

As far as I know you just need a curret valid driving license.

Might be worth contacting them and asking before booking though.

Here's their site:

A Veyron drive would be fantastic, but I don't think the missus will stretch to £1k for my birthday present! eek

I've heard that on some of them they won't let you take the car past a certain rev range etc etc

Yes that is true, though it varies from car to car.

In my excitement I neglected to note how many miles the SV had covered but I suspect it might have still been running in, so we weren't revving it too hard.

It's possible that the rev limit is partly governed by how much you frighten the instructor!

Niceone, Thruxton is good, its my local track, i drove a lh/d f355 round there earlier this year. Any chance of posting high res copies of those pics? They'd satisfy the 1080p monitor nicely smile

I've done a couple of Thruxton experiences in Murcie, F430, 360, 996 Turbo, etc.

Bit expensive, but well organised and memorable. It also depends what instructor you get... Had a female instructor in the 360 Spider who told me not to go above 5k revs, then had a male instructor in the F430 who told me to give it the full beans!

Murcielago rocks - best car I have ever driven for an "out of this world" experience!

Glad you had fun!

I hope you got the pics ok macey.

SonnyM - I know what you mean, I drove a 996 Turbo at Prestwold Hall and must have given the instructor confidence because he really pushed me close to the limit of my (but probably not the car's) ability, and I learned a lot from him, including what a fantastic car that is!

So did the guy at Thruxton in a Lotus Exige.

I've run out of available Lamborghinis now, I've driven a Diablo and a Gallardo too, I'd love to try any of the others thoiugh, plus a Ferrari 355, 997 Carrera S and a rally car at Brands Hatch.

Not sure what to try next, modern V8 Ferraris make a silly and nasty noise, so perhaps an Aston Martin.
I don't really yearn to have one (compared to some others), but I might change my mind after a drive! ??? cool
