Hi,
I'm thinking about getting a Maserati GTS and realise for the cost of it new I could get a three or four year old 612; I need the four seats. Which one is going to be cheaper to run over say four years net of depreciation? I'm thinking the Maserati would depreciate more over four years and factoring that in would cover the additional costs of Ferrari warranties which I've been told are around £2500 per year (is that right?). Routine maintenance on them don't seem to be that different neither.

Separately, I've driven both the DB9 and the GTS. I wouldn't drive anywhere close to the limits of these cars on public roads so not that fast but the DB9 felt to me to be the better drive with more feel on the steering and through the seats at normal road speeds. Do you agree? The rear in the DB9 looks too small even for a young kid so I think I'll be ruling it out otherwise it might have got my preference over the GTS.

Would like to get ideas from people who've owned or have had extensive experience with these cars, thanks.

Have you checked the depreciation on Maser GT's? They are still over 60k and in short supply. I'd guess that the 612 would cost more to run, also be aware that these extension warranties have lots of exemptions so not everything is covered(wiring for instance, diagnostics initially). I would suggest that you test drive both and decide which one you'd prefer rather than buying what someone else thinks you should buy. As for the back seats, the Maser has more legroom than the 612 which maybe a consideration.

I am persoanlly very keen on 612's (in selected colours) but in the Maser's favour, it's worth remembering that it's actually a 5 seater which may come in handy from time to time.

612 for me every time! Gorgeous car, so classy. Of course, get as late a car as possible. Not bad value now!

Just to clarify I was refering to the Granturismo S which I think is a strict 4 seater. I'm thinking 612s are good value but not having ever run Maseratis nor Ferraris before I would want to enter ownership with clear idea what the running costs are going to be (petrol isn't an issue as likely mileage is less than 4k pa) when almost everywhere you look you read about fortunes needed to run 12 cylinder Ferraris, thanks.

The shape of the 612 has grown on me over time and i think it looks quite nice in an understated kind of way. Have never driven or been in one so can't say what they are like and what they are like to own. I recently picked up a GTS and i'm really happy with it. A few electrics gremlins so far otherwise no problems at all! The paddle shift takes a little bit of time to get used to but i drive in manual all the time and it's fairly smooth around town. Quite comfortable as a four seater as well as i have been in the back for an hours journey and it was fine(don't really recommend for 6 footers though!) and the exhaust is one of the loudest things i have had the pleasure of owning. Just have to remember to turn it off when approaching home!

Cho, read about your boot scratching your bumper (different forum?) Don't understand how that can possibly happen as presumably the lip is short of the bumper. The sound is amazing. If it were just the heart making the decision then I'd buy the GTS just for the sound alone. In sports mode it's probably even louder than sports bikes! And the crackle on the overrun - superb.

Yeah that was on the Maserati UK forum. I thought it was just something they missed when prepping the car and didn't realise it was related to the bootlid but the service guys have told me that they readjusted the bootlid and have resprayed under warranty. It was actually hitting where the boot closes onto the inner bit of the bumper(bit difficult to visualise.

I think they are both great cars but for the moment the GTS has it for looks. Don't know what it will be like a couple of years down the road! Obviously the Ferrari name still means a lot to more people. I was chatting to an italian sales girl the other day who didn't even know what a Maserati was!
