It appears that I have sold my Maserati, what I need to know is, how do I retain my number plate. I have sold privately. In the past dealers have allways done this for me. I dont have a clue where to start! My car is being picked up tomorrow morning! I forgot all about my plate! Help please!

Thanks

Peter

Once the new owner gets the V5 back, he will need to fill in a form (can't remember the number) and put the plate into your name on retention (£105).

Unless you make it quite clear and in writing to your buyer that the plate is not included, wave goodbye to your number. Once the V5 is in his name you've got no rights to to your plate.

Thanks, so I am going to have to pay the buyer the fee, and hope he is honest enough to fill in the form. Damn wish I had done this earlier!

The plate only cost about £300 and is nothing special, only relevant to me. He seems like a decent guy.

I had the same problem recently when I sold my last car. Thankfully the guy was decent enough to fill the form out once he got the V5 back

If you want to ensure that you can keep your plate I'd suggest taking the car this afternoon to your local DVLA office and filling in all the paperwork, as has already been said, once the cars gone you are relying on the buyers honesty . . . . . . . . . . . having seen somebody buy a car with a PP deduct the dvla fees from the price and still not transfer the plate I wouldnt be wanting to take any risks

Or if the buyer is nice enough to let you keep the full V5 and the tax disc number.. you can do it yourself at your leisure. then once you get the v5 back with the regular reg plate on you canfill the new buyers details on and send it off to the DVLA..

More importantly, have you found the Gallardo that's going to replace it?! hehe

No way would I let the papers go without putting the number on retention first. He may seem ok, but then he might simply be too busy later and then that's it, the number is his.

If he is a decent guy he will understand, give him copies of all relevant papers and then forward the originals when you get them back with the old number back on.

That's what I did when I bought a car a few years ago and the owner had not put his number on retention in time. A V% is not proof of ownership anyway.

I have got my eye on a couple, going to see one tomorrow, wrong colour though, it's blue, but who knows. It's just down the road from me. I am gonna take my time over this one, actually test drive and get an inspection done before I buy it! I also need to clear my garage out, stick carpet on the walls etc. I am really trying not to get too excited!

This is the impossible part isn't it! hehe

Re: the registration, when I sold my 996 with my personal plates on (to speed up the deal), I got the guy to give me a cash deposit to the value of the plates which, I returned once he delivered me the retention slip signed and ready to go.

Well done - still trying to sell my cayenne gts - seems like people are not queuing up to by 50K upmarket SUVs/'gas guzzlers' in a global recession....strange...

But still enjoying the Gallardo - an amazing car. The wife has started to drive it now - albeit with a red satin cushion which I have to remove anytime i get in! (she doesnt like being too low down).rolleyes

hi justin, why are you selling up? Buying a 'practical' car?

I think one of the problems with selling a high value car privately is that a lot of people want to take out finance on the full or partial amount. I dont think there are many finance companies that are willing to lend on a private purchase.
I dropped the price of my car quite severley just to have a quick sale, and it worked. The buyer got a bargain. He flew down from Scotland this morning to pick it up, and is now driving it all the way back up to Glasgow!
I had my car for 6 months, it has cost me £8k in total!! Alot for 6 months!

I'm still in two minds whether to sell it or not. Its my only car just now and is a wee bit impractical. Its a joke the amount of time wasters who email and phone though!
