I like the Gallardo, but am put off by a number of clutch related horror stories...does it/can it really go that frequently? I would be looking a 2004 car. When it does go, what is the cost to replace it?

The easy answer is this:
If a Gallardo has been treated like a Toyota Corolla, it will have suffered in more ways than just having a general battering or needing a frequently replaced clutch!

The latest version of the Gallardo clutch is greatly advised ('E' version, sintered) as is not expecting the car to go full bore from every set of traffic lights...

Like any car, especially a Lamborghini, the car you are interested needs as much history as possible, the more detailed the better.

There are a number of Gallardos of all ages out there that have seen the far side of 40,000 miles from a clutch and those (actually quite few) horror stories have become less and less over the last couple of years as Gallardo buyers/owners have become rather less the clutch-killer professional and the actual clutch units have improved.

The 'received' wisdom is that the version 'E' clutch is best which is nearly as good a thing as a car that's not been the subject of too many knobhead's tender 'care'.

Replacement and maintenance costs will not become any less with age - Gallardos are still £100k+ supercars, even if you buy one from a credit-crunched panic sale! There are ways to minimise costs though - keep reading here on PH!

Choosing your vendor with care is also a very good idea. There are enough Gallardos out there to be able to do that and there's a simple way to check if the seller of the car you're interested in meets with the general approval of the PistonHeads massive!

Just place a link to the advert and ask here; there's no need to buy from a dodgy dealer.

atb and good luck!!

Edited to change 40,0000 miles to something much more likely! smile
