This might seem a little random, and slightly 'cup half empty', but the Countach has for as long as I can remember been my absolute favourite car of all time.

Now, I keep thinking about what could have been.....

The Miura SV, stunning car and the ultimate Miura as far as outrageous Lamborghinis were at the time.

Diablo SV, as above.

And now the fantastic Murcielago SV has been launched, I can't help wondering why they didn't, and what Lamborghini would have done to the Countach if they had done an SV version....???

Am I the only person to have thought this...? boxedin

... no you're not alone ...

BUT the 'cult' of those two letters wasn't an ongoing 'idea' BEFORE the Diablo SV was made - there wasn't any conscious efforts made before then to resurrect those letters. The Miura was a 'product' (ha!) of the days when Ferrucio Lamborghini owned the company and when matters were usually a little chaotic though the lack of a Countach SV in the 1980s just a 'retro-thought' in the minds (mostly) of journalists in the mid-1990s when Automobili Lamborghini's need to keep the Diablo as fresh as possible was paramount.

I'm off to LCUK's annual dinner weekend now but I'm sure there will be many other opinions on this subject anyway...

It's a great thought to have... a lighter, more extreme Countach... "let's call this car the Countach SV !"

The question must always be, surely, just how much more extreme could the Countach ever have been than it already was by the standards of its time or even by the standards of 2009?

I see what you mean about SV not being a 'tradition', as it were, back then (I've no doubt, and I rather hope, that Lamborghini will continue it's run of SV versions for future models) and maybe the late 1980's, the twilight years of Countach production, was a difficult time economically (at Lamborghini and generally in the world) as well as a difficult time within Lamborghini due to management changes etc.

I also agree that it's difficult to imagine a more outrageous Countach, and the Koenig Specials and customised cars that have been created are mostly a backward step in styling to my eyes.
But as with the Miura, Diablo and Murcielago, Lamborghini seem to get it so right, so I'm sure a factory Countach SV would have been a wonderful looking car.

Perhaps, as it was the ultimate and arguably the fastest car available for so long, that the competition just wasn't there to make Lamborghini feel the need to raise their game like they have to now to keep up with new models of Ferrari, Porsche etc. ...?

It also makes me wonder if 'Jota' will be used again, the Miura and Diablo versions were spectacular...

Anyway, have a good weekend!

A slightly pesimistic view could be that the "SV" moniker is now simply a marketing tool no matter that the all the SVs are stunning.

This could also be the case with the "LP" moniker. This was originally used to denote that the engine was longitudinally mounted as apposed to transversly as was the case with the Miura.

But these days all Lambo's had longitudionally mounted engines so why use "LP" to distinguish them.

I agree that 'LP' is unecessary, but it's kind of a Lamborghini tradition as well I suppose.

'SV' may well be liked by the marketing guys, but it does mean something, and something special too, not just metallic paint and different wheels.

I don't see any of the SVs as marketing tools as such, but as an even more raw, more powerful, better looking and (probably) more focused driving machine.

That's why I think it would have been utterly spectacular had Lamborghini given the Countach the SV treatment.

I suspect my describing the "SV" as a marketing tool wasn't quite what I meant, as you say the cars with it on aren't just standard cars with go faster stickers on.

Fair enough, but it probably is good for marketing in the long run anyway!

They will be remembered and desired, so when future SV models are released they are instantly highly desireable!
