Was driving along last night when the air-bag light came on, then shortly followed by the battery light and a sort of electrical burning smell. pulled over and turned off the the engine, had a look around and couldn't see anything untoward. Tried starting and only got the ticking noise like a dead battery.

Then after waiting about 2 minutes, tried it again and was fine. The lights were still on, but then they went off after a few minutes of driving.

Then about 10 miles down the road they appeared again, joied by the ABS light. Then the lights dimmed, and there was loss of power as it couldn't rev above tick-over.

Killed the engine and coasted to a halt, and was unable to start due to lack of power.

Any ideas if this is just a duff battery or are there any common electrical faults that may have caused this?

Cheers
Jonty

Where abouts is the Alternator located? Any simple way of checking if its that or the bad earth?

Bottom of the engine, end near the firewall, nearer the drivers side.
You should be able to spot it, and check the big earth strap is on it.

If its shagged (happened to me), read this.

Hi Jonty,

Did you resolve the issue? Curious how you fixed it.
