Been thinking it may be time to scratch the Ferrari itch. While personally I love the double H gate manual box, it looks like F1 is the only way to go - manuals seem pretty rare and appear to restrict resale? Is that right?

Any gotchas to be aware of? It'll be Ferrari approved second hand, so I guess it'll be in excellent condition.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

f1 adds about 6k to price from my "research" of a few months ago. ccm brakes are supposed to be very good but scary to replace - tho apparently shouldnt be needed. As to ferrari approved cars condition i saw some fairly shoddy looking ones - stone chips, swirl marks, minor scratches to paint lacquer, scuffed leather - was quite surprised.

On the options, daytona seats are nice, racing seats look good but hurt, ipod connector, carbon driving zone much nicer than standard trim all good to have.

Manual should be ok to sell on as they are rare if you want manual buy manual.
If you are 6' or more you may want to avoid Daytona seats as they make you sit high up. The carbon seats give you more headroom & IMHO are more comfortable.
Agreed some dealer cars are not presented very well.

Am I correct in saying that the carbon seats come on various sizes? S, M, L etc?

thats correct but large seems to be the most popular as these cars are owned by fat old men who think they are young

I agree about buying a manual. The reality is there is still a market for manual and those who want it WANT it so i can't see it being a problem for resale.

John,

I don't know much, but a F430 F1 clutch will last about 16k miles .. costs about £3k to replace. The life depends on how much start stop traffic and reversing. They can do a 'read out' of what is left. Most dealers seem to swirl the paintwork on their used cars ... but Maranello have a detailing company so I suspect their stock to have really good overall paint condition.

Colour also seems very important for resale. One area I have not heard about is clocking. Ferraris are very mileage price sensitive, so I would double check any low mileage car's history.

As I said .... I am still learning ...

Manual all the way! As for residuals just look at 355 an 360's a slushbox will prove harder to sell and ultimately the stick will always sell real quick!

Surely that's due to the 355 and 360 F1 box not being anywhere near as good as the 430's? I wouldn't have bought a 360 F1 but will hopefully be buying a 430 F1 in the near future, I felt the F1 box on the 430 far superior.

How tall Neil? The wife 'may' be giving me the green light to buy something exotic for a year or so, but I'm 6' 5" and that's kinda limiting.... What's the room inside the CS like?

At that height you will need carbon seats as all others you sit very high (unless you have short body and long legs wink)
With daytona seats my head touched the roof with carbons I have plenty room plus still room with full face helmet on.

Thanks for the feedback - appreciated.

The F1 box is pretty awesome - way better than the Aston Martin Vantage V8 automated manual and a bit better than the 911 PDK box.

It appears that most 430s are F1 nowadays - I was quoted numbers of <10% manuals and they will tend to be purchased as keepers by fans of the marque rather than bought and sold.

But the drive....

Ok, so it's bonkers fast. Floor it in 2nd and the noise is awesome as the horizon hurtles into view at obscene speeds.Looks amazing, but I did notice that the rosso corsa shows up swirl marks in a big way.

The downsides for me were:
It's too bloody noisy. Unless you upshift all the way to 6th asap it does start to grate.
Cabin - did not feel special in the way that a Vantage V8 feels like a luxury item.
Usual supercar problems - it's very wide and very long and hard to judge for gaps.
Felt less settled than a 997 C2S, 997 turbo or a Vantage V8.

I'm a crap driver so I am sure that many better drivers will scoff at the last point there, but to a mere mortal I did not feel as safe in the F430. Not that I was going sideways round corners, just that the whole package felt twitchier. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic car, but I am not sure it'd be right as an only car, felt more high days and holidays rather than daily driver.

So, it's a maybe. Going to drive a Gallardo shortly and see how that feels...

"scoff"

I'd stick with the AM mate, although the Gallardo does feel a bit 'planted'.

R8 - just cannot bring myself to spend a lot of money on an audi.

Yeah, I know that's a facile, one-dimensional argument when so much of any modern car is bought-in and mass produced whether it's Graziano gearbox, Bosch fuel injection, brembo brakes, airbag systems etc. etc. but Audi has no sex appeal....

OK, so do you think that an F430 is less twitchy than a 997 C2S or a Vantage V8? Interested to hear your views - I am open minded enough to listen.

Hi John,

It might just be that you need to modify your driving style for a 430, it does have 110BHP more than a V8 vantage, so what stlye might work for you in the V8 you may just have to adjust for a car that does have considerably better performance.

I've driven a V8V and a 430, the 430 in my opinion is much more planted than the V8, you just need to be careful with the right foot smile

John.
