Can't find much concrete information on how much oil people think their 550's use - has anyone got a good rule of thumb - i had mine with the oil somewhere between min and max from Foskers (they tell me it shouldn't be as high as max and you should check it after you've been for a drive when the engine is warm). 350 (rapid) miles later it was down to minimum and required the best part of a litre to bring it back up to the halfway mark - is this excessive oil usage?

Any thoughts very gratefully received...

Also previous owner using 5w40 fully synthetic Shell Helix oil - with the link between Ferrari and Shell, assume this is ok to use?

Im not a 550 owner but a 360 modena, that sound excessive to me... Sorry to be blunt but that works out to nearly a gallon every 1000 miles

I had a 550 for six years and never had to top it up between services. The car was used regularly, fast and in traffic.

Nice people at Fosker might be a idea to ring then & ask.. No car should use that sort of oil in that amount of milage,, Lots of high performance cars use a litre every 1000. seem to be the Norm..

Mine uses none. Oil leaks on cam seals are common, but that should just be a few drops.

Check garage floor for leaks. It could be a hose. Mine sprang a leak on a high pressure hose, and my garage floor was covered.

You should check oil level when very hot or with engine running.

Mine doesn't use any at all - probably a good idea getting the garage to have a look on the basis better a small bill now than a huge one later
