Apologies if this comes across as a bit ignorant, but why do I get the feeling from people's posts that by buying a super-car with 20k+ miles is not a great thing to do, and get the feeling that a 20k mile product is greatly inferior to a 4k mile car of the same model?
I mean, in regard to most cars, they're only just wearing-in at 20k, so why is it such a bad thing and why are they priced so much cheaper and in far less demand?

Is it just because the majority of supercars will have very low miles on them, and this exaggerates the un-attractiveness of a 20k model? And the rate of depreciation is greater on a higher milage model (obviously the fact it's higher milage decreases it#s value regardless).

Or do they just have a far lower maturity stage to most cars, where they become less reliable / take a hit in performance / require more and more attention(cash) to keep running?

Reason I'm asking is, around next March my dad will be looking to make his first supercar purchase after owning a multitude of Range-Rovers (which seem to have a completely different pattern to depreciation and value).

He'll have around 80k to spend and I'm just worried that he'll only be looking at the dog-end of the 430/Gallardo range, so was curious about whether this would be a worth-while move considering the negativity 4year old+ ~20k mile cars get. Am wondering if he'd be better off going for a new(ish) Maserati GranTurismo/AMV8 although I'm aware these cars won't offer the same sort of driving experience a 430/Gallardo will.

Thing I don't get about people saying 'avoid high milers' is, surely if the car is 4 or 5 years old, surely anything under 20k is more worrying. Probably been sat around doing nothing for the best part of 4 years. No thanks. Fair enough if buying a year old/newer one, less mileage would be nice. But on a 5 year old car, one thats done <10000miles would put me off personally.

I'd rather get a used but looked after example.
Try a search. This subject seems to come up daily.

the newer cars generally are much better built and therefore a lot more reliable -430 360- tend to have a lot more miles and owners than older ferraris like 355 , 348. There is a folklore associated with ferrari ownership that says under xxxx miles is good and over xxxxx is bad and unfortunately the cars are priced accordingly.
the couple best bits of advice is this - buy on condition and history . the rest is pretty much irrelevant. your dad will his own colour spec in mind and so does ever other buyer. so with this in mind try to buy the latest model within your budget and do not put off by the old wives' tales smile

Exactly that. All the time there are ultra low mileage examples around, even if it is a true mileage or not, it sets the bar falsely high.

with 80k you should be able to take down a very reasoable, low mileage gallardo, i took mine brand new out of lamborghini at a tick over 100k, albeit it i did luckily time the mkt low back in november. there are plenty of deals to be done out there stil despite a pick up in used values in 2009 thus far - depends how hard you push the seller and how forced their hand is.

the introduction of the LP560 is also assiting "deals being done" on older gallardos...

in terms of a maserati or V8 - the experience is totally different, not better or worse, just completely different...so your father needs to decide exactly what he wants for a car..

20k miles on one of the most recent gallardos, in my opinion shouldn't be a big deal with audi behind them.

It's only going to be relevant in pounds and pence if you buy it with low mileage and then rack it up before resale. 430's and Gallardos can clearly rack up big mileages without deteriorating as long as they are maintained properly.

The value disparity due to mileage is as big a joke as the colour one, I'd take a blue 430 on 20k miles over a "resale" red one on 2k miles and put the difference towards the next toy!!

Think the perceptions of mileage on supercars needs to be revised. Modern supercars are reliable and well built in general. The large engines are often not that highly stressed. Cosmetic condition and regular servicing matters far more.
My Murci covered 1000 miles in its first two years of life, yet I did 1000 miles in one week a while ago without going anywhere particularly (just burger bars). The car didn't feel any different on friday than it did on monday wink

Furthermore, the highest mileage diablo I've owned, needed the least spent on it and drove the best.

Alright, cheers, doesn't seem they'll be much trouble then.

I'm assuming the nearer we come to the release of the 458 the more they'll depreciate as demand takes a hit, aswell as with more being put on the market as people take/make orders for the newer model.

Just out of interest, how did the release of the 430 affect the prices of the pre-owned 360s, a noticable amount? Or nothing worth waiting for?

Assuming this thread is still about high mileage supercars - an interesting article in the "Running Reports" section of "EVO" magazine this month by Simon George the guy who runs a couple of Murcielagos for his track experience company . His orange Murcielago has done 122,339 miles - he lists the costs which don't seem to be over excessive - and also notes that it has been driven by 1511 different drivers on the track day events !
This must be the highest mileage supercar in the world (?) and shows that when used as the writer says "it drives better than ever" - surely this must be better than some thirty year old Ferraris that have done 3,000 miles or the Porsche 930 Turbo for sale recently with 200 miles on the clock - after all weren't these cars made to be driven !?
I heard a theory some years ago that suggested the reason we (in the UK) have an issue with high mileage is because we're a small island and aren't used to driving massive distances on a regular basis ( as the Europeans do) - I'm sure condition is far more important than mileage .

Taking into account the previous couple of posts re potential reduction in 430 values because of the introduction of the 458 - I'm considering the purchase of a 430 Spider - I assume I'm better off waiting until next March/April than buying now ? any opinions welcomed

Leggy Fcars are difficult to sell unless they are VERY cheap.

But then you will hit the seasonal bump in Spider prices that comes with the onset of Spring.

i dont think the 458 spider is due until 2011. not seen any sign from the ads of 430 prices being down much, maybe a couple of spiders 5k cheaper than at the beginning of the summer i would have thought that with stock market prices back up etc that there is more disposable or perceived income around now than 6 months ago

Further to the topic of high milage - I have done nearly 10,000 miles in my Gallardo since April. I bought the car to drive it - which I do all the time - not to be left in the garage. If I lose money on the car because of the milage I really don't care. My car gives me so much pleasure and puts a massive smile on my face - worth every penny of depreciation!!

I bought a Carrera GT with relative high mileage of (22k miles-ish iirc), had no problems , enjoyed it and had no problem selling it .

Doesn't put me off if bought at right price.

You have to face reality when looking at mileages on anything remotely exotic - clocking is endemic.

If everyone wasn't doing it, how would all those outfits offering "odometer correction" stay in business? Or perhaps Porsches, Ferraris and Lamborghinis just have really, really inaccurate and problematic odometers which the dealers can't fix.

I would say that November - December are probably the best months to buy a Spider.
