Release bearing for Gallardo???
Discussion
Whilst getting quotes for a new clutch, the subject of release bearings has come up. i.e. Do I need a new one.
How would I know if my current release bearing needs replacing? Has anyone else had a release bearing fitted at the same time as their clutch? At about £2000 + Labour (same labour as that involved to replace a clutch) I would rather not have one replaced unnecesarily! Am I worrying over nothing here?

They must be kidding. I did my clutch release bearing at the same time as clutch on my a4 as it simply made sense as release bearing is a gearbox out as well as clutch so both at same time makes sense from a preventative sense so 2K parts and labour on top of clutch is something of a joke.
Why not call a different lambo dealer and ask what is involved in changing the clutch. Then call another and ask same question about release bearing.
Then call a parts indy and see what all the bits should cost.

I have been quoted £1900 for the part from one place, and £1500 from another. I dont even know if it needs doing. I only wanted a quote for a clutch, and have been asked on two occasions if my release bearing needs doing. I dont know what the symptoms are for a release bearing. The car squeals slightly when I pull away, but only sometimes. I have been told that this is the clutch by most people I speak to, today I have been told that this squealing is the release bearing when I described it down the phone. It really is hard to know who to believe! I dont want to line someones pockets due to being given false information. Why not call a different lambo dealer and ask what is involved in changing the clutch. Yeah fully understand. On second thoughts doesnt the g have an obc which can check the clutch and somewhat diagnose any issue with it?
Anything other than that i would suggest option two would be run it down to an indy. Tell him you have booked it in with your local but you wanted a second opinion. If you point out you have been told clutch and release bearing which is what its booked in for it would be in his interest to be honest with you if its just one item as it will potentially get him the job of servicing your car.
Or of course a real outside card would be to find a local audi dealer which has a good rep and ask them if they can diagnose symptom since the car is pretty much the same as the R8 mechanically.
Actually a second thought here. Are you having any trouble engaging the gears at all? Noise can be any number of things but if trouble actually changing gears and noise tends to indicate quite clearly a clutch release bearing apparently.

Think you can only diagnose stuff like that with e-gear, not manual.Anything other than that i would suggest option two would be run it down to an indy. If you have the motor running, dip the clutch pedal then lift, repeat several times.
basically see if you notice a change in pitch sound from the clutch area, you will prob
need a mate for that part .
The release bearing sits between the the clutch leaver and the pressure plate fingers.
In the past i have had cars making lots of bearing noise at idle dip the clutch and it loads up the bearing
which then reduces noise.ie worn bearing.
A clutch bearing on my vette is aprox $140 so most replace it,just because its a pain to get at,not cos its bad.
a r/bearing is a release bearing is it not.I hope this helps.
i wouldnt think a lambo bearing is any diff, but what do i know
cheers matey

Thanks, I will give that a go tomorrow. I have been quoted £1900 for the part alone. I understand that if I were to need it, it is worthwhile to get it done at the same time as the clutch. I really dont think I need one though, as the only time the car makes a squealing noise is when I pull away, and even then it's not all the time. Maybe it's a dealer wanting to make extra cash! Really angers me that it's such a struggle to find anyone honest to do work on the car!basically see if you notice a change in pitch sound from the clutch area, you will prob

When they take the box off to replace the clutch it should be fairly obvious if the release bearing has gone i would imagine. As long as they have the part in stock i'd wait until the box is out to decide on the release bearing.
Knackered release bearings sound uncannily like skateboard wheels.

Ive been in the car trade all my working life and never heard of a bearing comming to 2K. As said before a bearing only comes in to play when changing gears either up or down the box,, If the bearing is that dear & cost that much why would it wear out..Had complete clutches put in ferraris and porsche turbos never come to anything like that,, Sorry but it takes a lot to shock me and this is completley ridculous.. IMO
This is the quote I got from one of the cheaper places, I wont mention names. But they are an Indy.
I have just copied and pasted.
1. To replace the clutch with new (standard) £2633.43 + Vat
2. To replace the clutch with new (uprated – supposedly suitable for 2006 model year car onwards but should fit a 2005 car) £2980.13 + Vat
3. To replace clutch release bearing with new, if carried out at the same time as replacing clutch £1669.56 + Vat
4. 30000 mile service £1350 + Vat

£2000 for a clutch release bearing, they must be off their heads. I suggest you give Mike Pullen a call at Carrera Sport. Based at Heywards Heath. I'm sure he'll fall of his chair laughing. Mike's a great guy and more than helpful.
I actually got a very good quote from him, £2500 inc vat for a new clutch. Release bearing wasnt mentioned. But when I asked him about the new uprated sintered clutch, he didnt seem to know what I was talking about. That kind of put me off a bit. I do want to make sure that a good job is done with the correct part. Even the E-gear bearing is nowhere near that price : http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Lamborghini-Gallard...

Amazing, how can these places get away with charging £1900!
To be honest, if a clutch is replaced, the thrust race bearing is changed as a matter of course, release bearings costs very little compared to changing the clutch and labour, do not have your clutch done at a garage that asks you if you want the thrust bearing changed, it needs to be changed if you are doing the clutch anyway.
Take it somewhere else, have a look at Monkfish sure they only quote £800 for the clutch, but I may be wrong, but check.

Have you seen the size of the release bearing on a G?.
It is mahooosive, No suprising it's so expensive and hardly ever needs replacing.
I doubt mine needs replacing to be honest, but all these conversations I have had with dealers/Indy's has planted a seed in my head!It is mahooosive, No suprising it's so expensive and hardly ever needs replacing.
I am sure when I had a clutch done in my maserati the bearing was only a few quid.
