Apparently sold at auction some time back with much higher miles. Anyone know the car?

I don't know the car, but I'd be amazed if it needed rings at 20,000 miles. Ours has done over 70k, doesn't use any oil and goes very well.

If that is the mileage I'd be looking to find an alternative reason for it blowing smoke - could be a broken ring of course which could have scored a bore. Could still be a good buy at the right price though - if you can get the engine work done for a reasonable fee.

Sounds like the real mileage could be nearer to 90k.. is this more normal on a 308 of that mileage. Are there any inherent strengths/weaknesses of carb cars compared to QV's?

Ours is a carbed car, I understand that they were the most powerful and (for me at least) are an altogether simpler set up to deal with - fewer valves to shim up, less electrics etc.

In about 20k over the last 6 years we've had no real issues except for a head gasket going. This necessitated engine removal and allowed us to have a look at the the state of the internals. Pistons and bores were in very good condition, in fact the only items that really showed any sign of wear were the valve guides - they would cause some oil smoke though I'd never noticed anything prior to this.

The engines are actually very reliable, so long as you keep on top of the belt changes (doesn't require engine removal on a 308) they should go on forever. Additionally clutches are easy to change which always helps.

Personally I'd be most careful about checking for rust..

If the mileage is real, could just be a sticky rings or running rich............but it could also be in need of a complete rebuild (£3k+ without having to replace liners, headwork etc)

A PPI with compression and leak down tests would be able to identify the probable cause of the smoke, at the very least going by the description it needs a major service.

Do like 308s in black smile
