love the comments:

He says patient care at his surgery will be affected by the loss of his vehicle and he does not think he will be compensated.
"I don't think I can sustain a financial hardship case," he said.

Unfortunate for the owner but I think he'll have to come to some arrangement with the mechanic/his employer!

P.S. I heard about an idiot in Scotland who was caught drink driving whilst under an existing ban and the court have seized his car permanently I believe. Now this guy is clearly an idiot but it's curious that the penalty he must face is the loss of the car he was driving at the time. It just happened to be his Audi TT (a couple of years old, I believe) but what would the penalty have been if a) he had been driving a shed, or b). driving another car that he had stolen/had been lent to him etc. It seems that the penalty (loss of a car worth £15k?) was basically unrelated to the crime, but that's modern life for you! It's hard to argue that the threat of losing 'your car' should be some form of deterrent to useless feckwitts

Am I missing the plot?
The mechanic gets caught speeding… but they impound the car, but the car belongs to someone else… and they are the ones now being punished for it!?
Please tell me that I've got it all wrong??? If I haven't, can I borrow a shot gun from someone as I need to make a withdrawal at the bank!!

He's hiding behind the law ....using the letter instead of the spirit.
I wonder what would happen if the owner turned the tables and started theft proceedings against those that seized it.

you simply cant seize a vehicle in this way.

nuts.

Totally outrageous....I'd hope he could challenge the legitimacy of that law in court somehow and get large amounts of compensation. I'm sure the law was put in place for a good reason, but punishing an innocent person is totally inappropriate - all it does is make a mockery of legislature and make people have less faith in it, so totally counter-productive.

I think the aussie authorities are completely barking mad. We've got it all wrong. The car committed the crime so it must be punished. It has to be seperated from its owner for 28 days and it's not the mechanics fault. The car made him do it. Gosh we are such silly people.
