The Mclaren MP4-12C, do you want one??
Discussion
Ok, so we have all seen the prices of the new 458 Ferrari and I think the general consensus is that it is expensive. Can I therefore ask how many have logged a serious interest with McLaren for the new MP4-12C as I suspect its going to be cheaper, although this might not be your main reason for wanting one?
I am still on the fence about the Ferrari until I see one in the flesh, but the McLaren appeals to me right off the bat

Would love either if they came with a stick thing to change gear with. Unfortunately neither do I am still on the fence about the Ferrari until I see one in the flesh, but the McLaren appears to me right off the bat

The proposed specs of the Mac are enticing but the styling of the car fails to inspire me. And why oh why did they choose that colour to launch the concept? I'm hanging on to my 458 order at this stage.
The car they had at MTC was silver/grey and apparently much debate about what colour to show it at "launch" - the orangists won. It looks great in the silver/greyI have strong reasons for wanting one, and as a mere mortal I want to wait until I see one in the flesh. Even then looking at the above post maybe you have to be "special" to be even able to place an order for one?
The biggest negative to me are the looks, it just doesn't look very inspiring or exotic to me but I do think the colour doesn't do it any favours. If they were going to paint it orange (not burnt bronze) they should have used the proper McLaren Orange but I bet it doesn't look good in that colour either. Certainly looks like it'll be a silver/grey/black technical sort of car to me.

Not sure about that as I'm on the list, and supposedly seeing it in the flesh soon. Looks like it'll come down to a choice between this and the Noble M600 (which does have a proper gearbox), as I'm not sure the 458 will be able to make up for its comparative lack of performance with its looks.Mike Rob said:
Don't shoot me down but I think the car looks fantastic and I love the colour.
So do I, but then I like orange, I just hope it looks as good in the flesh. The choice of the launch colour is always difficult and I had an interesting conversation with Peter Boutwood from Noble over his rather questionable choice for the M600. It seems a lot of colours just don't work as launch colours or are already 'taken' eg red by Ferrari.Harsh said:
As Mike said, it's a 'sticking' point that there's no proper gearbox.
Sad to think that cars which are designed purely for pleasure dont come with the option to actually enjoy it.
That said, if the question is the choice between the 458 and the MP4-12C...
The McLaren wins hands down.
LOL I guess this implies that F1 cars don't have a proper gearbox either...Sad to think that cars which are designed purely for pleasure dont come with the option to actually enjoy it.

A great manual does feel good to change, though when I drove an F430 I felt the F1 box enhanced the experience.
I can't afford either but I prefer the look of the Ferrari. The McLaren is probably great, but rather generic and forgettable to look at. Ferrari have moved the game on with the 458's styling and I think the other big-hitters are going to have to start thinking 20 years ahead of where they currently are in order to catch up.
