Hi Guys

Does anyone know when these passes will be open. Planning on driving the Lambo back to Cyprus in May and fancy a day in the mountains.

Thanks

Usually early June but obviously dependent upon weather. I have done Stelvio in June with lots of snow on the top but road was fine. Both are excellent droives. enjoy if you can. I think May is probably too early though.

There are two ways up and down the Stelvio. The steep way with the uneven road and the newly laid smoother road. They dont tell you that on top gear;)
I last did this in 2008 and if your front spoiler is low, you will damage it.
When i returned to the Maranello hotel. Franco said that the stelvio can be trouble for low slung cars. I knew what he meantfrown I damaged the underside and front spoiler of my Ferrarifrown It kept groundingfrown
When you are on the rough steeper side, some of the corners are so steep and sharp. You some times have to take two bites at it, shuffling backwards and forwards. And then you will have some one coming the other way. Its not rare to see cars at the top over heating in the hot summer months, due to the short lengths of roads that make up the Stelvio. The top is very nice though, good food and atmosphere. Good luck.
In terms of driving roads, the Stelvio pass falls into a pale significance when compared to the Dolomites, now thats the best driving road in Europe IMO. Not even the Route napoleon is any good any more due to the heavy traffic in the summer months. Hope this helps in some way.

From memory the ramp for getting in and out of Franco's garage can be a challenge in the 355 smile

Will mid to end of may be any better in the dolomites. My route will be from Calais to Bari in Italy but i dont really mind which way i go, just dont want to see endless miles of motorway. Last year did Calais-Colmar-Bologna-Imprunetta (near Florence)-Vasto-Bari so this year ??? Dunno yet. Am happy to set off and let the satnav find a hotel late afternoon. just fancy a prettier drive this year. Prob leave the wife at home and take the girlfriend. Oh thats right, Lambo was a divorce present!!!!!!!!
