Here's a funny one that only the truly most knowledgable would ever know!

With ref to the front luggage compartment I have noticed that on some 328s the underside of the panel that you open is sometimes painted in the black 'crackle' finish or sometimes covered in a nice sort of black felt carpet or some are completely untouched, just bright red! Is there a reason as some early cars and late cars are all sorts? Funny question that is of no significance but it nearly kept me from falling asleep last night!

The answer is a) you need to get out more; or b) learn of the wonders of sheep!!

I think all 328's had a felt type covere over the lid but it does tend to fall off hence the variation!

Is the issue not what they were like form new not what they are like now? Last cars built in 88ish so 22 years for people to play with them and change them.

This is in fact true. However from the factory all three options were available. I dont know why but some were painted the same colour of the car. Some with carpet and some with just black paint.
I know through research and my extensive ferrari library collected during my 328GTS ownership. That late 328s (88) were supposed to have a trim liner on the inside surface of the front bonnet to match the one covering the bottom of the trunk area of the hood. However mine was painted black.
Remember you are talking about a period during ferraris history were a painter would run out of paint half way through a job. Re mix some new paint which was slightly out, and continue painting the car wink there have been cases of Ferraris leaving the factory in 2 or 3 different shades of Rosso.

The pics bellow show two examples. The first one is a USA late 88 with material.
The other is an untouched factory painted lid. I wonder if the workers just forgot to dress it with black paint or carpet? but there are a few with just paint.
Hey Johnny Finance, i am going to give you more sleepless nights now with what i am about to say. Did you know there are 3 different 328 spare wheel colours? biggrin
Now go try to find out why ;D

Parts manuals list two different lids available for 1988.

Part 2 (none furry) has 4 part numbers, whilst part 33 (furry) has 6 different part numbers!

My guess is that as they started running down production, they had more number 2's than 33's

How you doing Spider?

I have owned three 328's and until last night in my garage it had never crossed my mind. There I was doing a little bit of nothing and then it stuck me, why is that so red? Out came the old pics of the other 328's all of which where different. My first thought was where is my 'shag pile' I want it but then I thought 'hang on' there is another 2ft square of bell end red that I can polish...

Nice to see so many of you can relate to this certain dilema offering such insight..Thanks

I suppose it didn't really hold up on any shut eye, but the spare wheel riddle might well..................................Go on then...............tell me.................DONT leave it until the morning!

Yaawwn!! Morning - Thanks alot...

In the wee hours all I could put it down to was that maybe the 'abs' 328 alloy was used on another model but still that wouldn't explain different shades of colour being used??? I will keep at it, I like puzzles!

Go on then, enoughs enough!! I now really hate you.. Thought I would check out my 328's spare, wish I hadn't. Brand new never been fitted still wearing the original tyre (as is the car) put it down alongside the other wheels and the spare does indeed appear to be a different shade. Whilst the cars 4 alloys are a nice sort of bright silver finish the spare seems to have a certain yellow ish tinge to it, almost a gold tone to the clear coat.. I now hate you because I wish I hadn't looked - I want a silver spare not a jaundice bd!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
