Anyone on here any experience or views on the difference between those two?
Am seriously thinking of selling some of my old cars and buying one modern supercar.
Although the R8 appeals the possible depreciation does not! So was thinking of buying a s/h spyder and worrying less about depreciation?
Is there likely to be any real difference in the driving of the two cars? running costs?
I do like lambos and would be sad to sell my old ones, but......

This video of mine features both cars, you get a short comparison as the R8 spyder and gallardo were travelling together at hat time.

I've driven an R8 and it's a very good car, I wanted to hate it but I must admit I really like it and I would have one, but not instead of a Lambo. The problem with the R8 for me is that it's not as practical as say a 911 i.e. it's much wider, lower, has less seats and will get more attention which therefore makes it harder o use everyday. So it's not as good an everyday car as the 911, so why not just buy the Lambo, which is a better car. All just my opinion of course. Oh and the R8 spyder just doesn't cut it for me I'm afraid, where as the Gallardo spyder is lick!

Had same dilemma when I made my purchase a couple of months ago. Drove the r8 on two extended test drives and just did not like it. It was too quiet and too easy. If I wanted a supercar to use for daily commute etc then an r8 would fit the bill, for any other reason the Lambo wins hands down, wow a much much better driving experience!

Oh also If you wanted a flappy paddle box the Gallardo’s one is supposed to be much better. The R8's one is absolutely horrendous!

Interesting views
I was thinking ( after been told by everyone) that a nice reliable modern car would be better. I think the G looks a bit nicer than the R8. However a £80-100k G which has lost 30% may be safer than a £100k R8 which is still to loose it's initial value?
Conversley I haven't owned a new car for 24 years and the idea of being the first owner ( and last ) has an appeal!
I have read a bit and the reviewrs are saying the R8 is less harcore than the 560 but I would be buying an older car say 2-3 years old at my budget?
Have people compared the R8 with the original G?
Haven't driven either and limited passenger experience of a 8cy R8

The V10 R8 will be faster, easier to live with, better warranty, build quality and cheaper maintenence costs. Every review has been overly positive and i gaurantee that it will never let you down(Friend sold a 04 Gallardo for a V8 R8 and it just felt better put together, no squeeks, thuds, smells, kangarooing, warning lights on dash etc, etc). Gallardo would still be my choice(big Lambo fan and love the looks) but in no way is it a better car than the modern V10 R8.

The LP560 Spider moved the game on but at £140k+ seems a tad pricey for a used model. Also not so sure of how well the Gallardo is holding its value nowadays compared to an R8. The peace of mind taking your R8 to your local Audi dealer is also a plus for me BUT i just know that if it was my money - the Lambo would win hands down even if i know its not a better car. Bit like an Elise v VX220, the Vauxhall was better put together(by Lotus) and faster with carpets, electric windows etc than the Elise BUT the Elise was a Lotus and thats why it done so much better.

Hard decision so please let us know what you decide. Its a REAL head over heart decision.

P.S. Countach was my first dream car, then the Esprit,Diablo then Murci. I guess i have a thing for wedge shaped supercars.smile

Paul, I have done many miles across various roads in both cars and have been vocal in the past in these forums about what I think. But I will try and summarise here.

Let’s forget the looks for the moment as that is purely subjective and concentrate on the car.

First the interior: The R8 is pretty much faultless from a quality and ergonomic point of view but is not the most dramatic looking. To make it stand out you have to spend a fortune on the options list. But you are blessed with a perfect diving position and good standard seats in which you can spend hours without discomfort.

The latest Gallardo's are also well screwed together but not quite to the same standard as the R8. The main problem with the Gallardo is its ergonomics. I am just under 6ft 3in and my head is banged up against the roof in the Gallardo, its even worse in the spyder. Also the peddles are very badly offset which gets very uncomfortable after an hour or so.

Now to the driving exp, even though both cars share a lot of mechanics, i.e. engine (in the R8V10) and suspension components the driving exp is very different. The Gallardo has a more track focused set up which is great if the roads are smooth but can work against you if they are not. The R8 is more compliant which gives you a better ride and better traction in bumpy corners. As a result the R8 gives more warning of when it is going to slide than the Gallardo does. So even though it has less power than the Gallardo it can be faster from A - B because you can exploit its strengths more of the time than you can in the Gallardo.

Noise, the Gallardo sounds better, the R8 sounds great but not as good.

Costs: Expect to pay 30% - 60% more on average for the Gallardo parts than you would for the R8's even though some parts are exactly the same and have both Lambo and Audi branding on them. Strange but true.

Second values also tend to favour the R8.

I hope this helps

Hi
If I was to affoard one of those cars then the countach would have to go! I have too many cars as it is, or possibly not enough but haven't got the cash to buy an expensive car without selling something.
Ride and comfort are very important to me in a car. Weird but true!
Still thinking. If I sell the countach I would want something spectacular to replace it.
Greatly obliged for the informed views. May nip over to my local audi dealer and ask for a wee drive to see what I think!

Paul, glad to see you are keeping an open mind on your future purchase.

As a side note I have this morning just bought this months copy of "Car" magazine that are featuring 30 years of the AUDI Quattro. And I have to say I am well chuffed, the reason being they have a review on the R8 V10 Spyder. The thing I am so pleased about is that their comments virtually mirror the comments I made in my reply to you earlier in this thread. I have obviously missed my true vocation in life and should have been a motoring journalist biggrin

Therefore from now on I wish to declare that all the comments I make should now be taken as gospel and that I will counter no descent on these matters. Streetrod has spoken, now carry on....bowthumbup

I would like to add a word or two about 'descent' if I may.

I hope nobody thinks I'm bringing this thread

down

or trying to initiate any sudden

fall

or even just attempting to lead the thread into

decline

or on a trip along a road from the top of the hill to the bottom...

All of which would not be at all decent but would be examples of a descent...

DISSENT however is, like resistance, character forming!!

ps Paulo Santonionionionio, why are you selling your QV? Unless it's for another Lamborghini, why sell it for an 'appliance' car like any Audi? If you do sell your Countach, could you try and NOT sell it to some sod in the Far East or Australasia, please...

I now wish to humble myself before the spelling police and apologise for my inappropriate behaviour. I formally request forgiveness for my transgressions and will try to do better in the future. Sometimes my dyslexia gets the better of me and the spell checker does not always get me out of trouble.frown

As for calling the Audi an "appliance" have you driven one? It has just as much "character" as the Gallardo, just different. Try both, I think you will be impressed by both but for different reasons.smile

Sorry Uncle David

Didn't mean to upset you! Am just thinking, just now. The Qv prices are going crazy just now! £166,000 in australia; £150,000 plus in europe! If someone wants to offer me more than £150k for mine i think I would have to say yes!
Is that me out of the club now?
It is a great car and has loads of charector. Had her out for her MOT today and a drive on friday night. I know nothing will come close for visual drama or attention grabbing.

Hi Paul,

Not the Countach, NNNnnnooooooooooo, I'll be your conscience tomorrow telling you not to do it. I don't think I could sell a Countach, the poster car of a whole generation for an Audi or a Lambo Audi.

John.
