Hi,

I've recently started a thread on the TVR forum on the above topic.

I wanted to see if owning and maintaining a Speed 6 TVR is comparable to owning a 355.

I've had a look through your threads and some of the prices arent dis-similar e.g. cost of a main service with belt changes (engine in) is about £800, the same sort of price as a 12k TVR service.

Some of the TVR boys were saying that a ferrari engine rebuild has costed £16k yikes

Then again the TVR S6 engine has been known to go pop on more than one occasion and a couple of these won't be far off £16k.

This isnt a what car thread, i def cant afford a fezza im just curious really.

Can any of you guys perhaps list your year to year costs?

Thanks

Firstly I would say one thing.... 355 don't need engine rebuilds!!! Mine is an early car has done nearly 60k miles and flys faster now than it ever has. I know two cars that are run on one of the supercar experience days that are both near 200k miles that have never had any engine work done to them. These are not TVR engines!

Secondly, they are strong reliable cars, over 5 years I'd guess you are looking at similar money to running a S6 car and having just come back from a Petrolhead Nirvana Tour that had a T350 that has had huge sums of money thrown at it (4.3 engine, suspension, brakes, everything really) it couldn't keep anywhere near the 355 on the twisties! (an have lots of video if anyone wants to doubt it!).

Well thats was my thinking, especially after looking at the member cars section and seeing how much money people spend on their TVR's. It just mademe think that you could probaby run a Ferrari on that sort of money.

There isnt as many 355 running costs on their to do a proper like for like hence my thread here.

So as long as you buy good and service them when they need it you should be okay?

What are the regular costs?

Tyres (a set every year?)
Brakes (Every 2 years)
Radiators (???)
Belts (every 3years)
Clutch (???)
etc???

Tyres - Rears are the issue. 265/35/18 you can do a search and pick a brand you like.
Brakes - I doubt every 2 years. I drive mine pretty hard and the brakes are fine. Again, pads and discs no different to any other car and simple to DIY.
Radiators - £500 + VAT + fitting new. £90 for a re-core + whoever you choose to fit it (again, a fairly simply DIY task)
Belts - £1600 or thereabouts. That excludes things like new tensioner bearings. The belts and bits are fairly inexpensive, the access and labour is the pricey part. Agian, you can DIY but its a bit more involved.
Clutch - access is simple as the clutch is at the back, so you just need to remove the bumper and exhaust. I think Verdi do it for about £500 all-in? Also, clutches tend to last quite a while, so its not a regular cost.

Other things which DO go wrong.
1. Manifolds. - £1200 a side. Periodically.
2. Butress cracks - need a repaint every few years.
3. Exhaust valve rattle.
4. Eats catalytic converters
5. Headlight motors - simple fix, motors not too expensive

Picked up the cylinder heads Saturday around 10am, got home and started work around 1pm.
Drove it around the block 5pm Monday.

That includes a session on the beer on Sunday evening as well.

So basically rebuilt and reassembled the whole thing over the long weekend.

Just a tip on the grubbiness. A pair of those exfoliating gloves and normal soap will do wonders. Put the gloves on, lather up and scrub your hands as normal give it about 2 minutes and with the exception of under nail dirt your hands will be clean, just don't tell the other half that you pinched her exfoliating gloves and you'll be set.

Nice to see Ferrari guys DIYing, I imagine it would be much more rewarding than when I spend tireless hours spannering away at my old Saab!

The exfoliating gloves take care of the knuckle grime, under nails its back to swarfega with a bit of sugar and a nail brush, also worth soaking your hands in warm soapy water until they go wrinkly, softens the nail a bit so you can get in with something to give them a good scrape.

I own several ferrari's 308 vetroresina 365 boxer 512 boxer and a 250 pf and a 250 gte.

I agree that 355 do not need engine rebuilds but if they need it then 16 k is kinda cheap for engine rebuild. But normally never problems with them.

Also own a griffith which a like too but absolutely poor build quality. TVR handle not so good as a ferrari. TVR is bit like ferrari in old days. On the other side i think sportscars do not need airco and other luxury and i like tvr for that more pure sportscar maybe. Anyway both nice cars.
