Gallardo clutch advice?
Discussion
Hi, i have a 2003 gallardo, its done 21000 miles and is a manual car. Its currently in for its annual service and i have received a phone call from the main dealer who has it and they have told me that the clutch is 80% worn! (i didn't think that it was possible to tell the clutch wear on a manual car?) I havent got any record of it ever having a clutch change before so im assuming its on the original one still. On any other cars ive had, i wouldnt ever replace the clutch unless it actually went! However in about 4 weeks i am driving my car to Classic le mans in france and am now worried weather the clutch is going to let me down whilst im out there as ive been told that there will be no warning of it going, like slipping, it will just pack up one day. Do you think i should have this replaced before i go? If so where would anyone recommend, main dealer or specialist? Main dealer have quoted me £3400 including VAT and mentioned about also changing the clutch release bearing for an extra £1900.
Any help appreciated
Thanks. George

I recently changed the clutch on my 05 Gallardo. My car had done about 27000 miles at the time it was changed. The only symptom I had was that it was squealing sometimes on pullaway, it wasn't even slipping really, I reckon I could have got a couple more K miles out of it. Apparently a heavy clutch pedal is a symptom. I got various quotes and many dealers told me that I would also need a release bearing for another £1900 as you have said. I spoke to Lambo HW who informed me that they would be very, very surprised if it did need this bearing as I think they said that they have only ever replaced one before. Anyway, I got them to do the clutch and it didnt need the release bearing. I think there are a lot of chancers out there that just try and fleece you over unnecessary work. Any help appreciated

If you do get your clutch done, go for the uprated sintered clutch, it costs a few hundred more (I think I payed about £3800) , but apparently lasts over twice as long as the standard one.

Ive had a clutch go on both gallardo and murcielago - both manuals. The sign i got was the biting point got very high to the point that the pedal was virtually fully up before it bit. So the 80% worn is probably a guestimate based on clutch behaviour/biting point. I wouldnt risk it if you are going abroad - it could go in 4 weeks, it could last for another 9 months.....
LHW are v.good for main dealer in my experience; Verdi are a lot cheaper if you are not bothered by the official sticker etc...

Thanks very much for your info and advice, i've now picked the car up from the service and the clutch works fine but as mentioned the biteing point is right at the top, so i dont think im going to chance it. Been phoning around for a few prices and it seems that no one is much cheaper than the mian dealer really, apart from a place up north in teeside which are £1300 cheaper than main dealer!! this would take 2 full days in travelling too and from though!
There is a way that Lambo techs can get a rough estimate of the wear on a manual clutch. It goes something like:
-Have the car on a level surface
-Engage 1st and bring up the clutch (no throttle)
-The anti-stall should engage and blip the revs up.
-They then use a formula to convert the peak revs to clutch wear.
I have a mail somewhere explaining the exact procedure; I will try and dig it out.

As you appear to be based in Eseex, if you aren't too concerned about the dealer stamp I would have a chat with Grimaldi, they have a great reputation and according to their website appear to be very good value for a new clutch.
The price of £950.00 on their site is for the labour only, how much does a clutch part cost?UH-Matt said:

That`s very interesting,my car has been doing exactly that.............................-Have the car on a level surface
