Dear Ferraristi

A few months ago I bought myself a beautiful 550. It is a fantastic car with only 13'500 km (some 8'000 - 9'000 miles).

I drove quite a few Maranellos and have learned that some of them show loss of power at about 6'500 - 6'800 RPM. Before and after this gap the car runs like a cat with its tale on fire.

Strangely the loss of power seams less intense if you selected higher gears (4th, 5th and 6th) but when I take over a car on a mountain road (2nd) the loss of power seams imense!

Is there a way to solve this problem?

Thank you for your help

Are you sure it isn't triggering traction control? (assuming it has such - I am not familiar with 550 per se).

When you say before the redline, do you mean the actual limiter of the car?

I am not familiar with your car in particular, however, all vehicles have a power band, the limiter of a car is just after the end of the most useful usable power.

After that point power drops, sometimes significantly, when your car hits the electronic limiter power will stop completely.

Where the power ends and limiter kicks in can often cheange between gears and depending on the engine temperature depending on the map of the car.

My bike for example will noticably loose power at 15krpm in 1st gear... in 2nd onwards it looses power at 16.2krpm and much less noticably... The limiter kicks in at bang on 16.5krpm

What your describing sounds fairly normal to me without actually witnessing it, unless I am missing something.

Thank you for your answers.

1. Nope it is not the traction controll, as i drive my cars without the electronic fiddlings.

2. No, it is not the rev limiter. After this "dip" where the car does not perform as good, it starts pulling very strong until the limiter...

I would have thought that a good rolling road should be able to sort this although having just come back from the Ring I can assure you that my car does not have any noticeable drop off in power as you describe.
A decent ferrari specialist should be able to sort this out for you

good luck
