Opinions please...
I currently have a F430 F1 (06) which I have owned for just over 2 years and am looking for another car which could be used more often. I live in London so use of the F430 is strictly on weekends (weather permitting). I'm looking for something that can be driven a LOT more often and not have to worry about leaving it parked on a meter, heavy servicing and running costs etc.

Audi R8 (V8) or 997 Turbo? Any recommendations, advice and info on running costs, living with the cars on a frequent use basis, what to look out for etc?

997 turbo I would say. Completely different driving experience to the 430. All weather traction, everyday useability, comparative economy. You`ll be able to not worry where you leave it as it will be a whoile lot less conspicuous.

I`d guess you know these things already though? Nice situation to be in, I just know where my money would be going!

i went from 430 spider f1 to 997 turbo because of london commute to work. the tiptronic is great in traffic and its a much smaller car than 430 which helps too. the only negative on the porsche is they have 2 year warranties so you will need to factor in that. servicing is every 2 years also though think i will have minor done on mine anually.

997 turbo. However, if you're considering the Tiptronic I'd recommend a GTR instead. Don't want to re-open that argument, but it's a far superior "auto" box.

I'd go for the R8 personally, the turbo is so quick that you'll be holding yourself back all the time. The R8 is a lovely car, I owned one when they first came out. It's got such a great engine and the performance is actually useable most of the time, admittedly not in London!

Though totally transformed when you press the sport button if you have sport chrono..suddenly it becomes only a bit crap on my 997 C2S!

I went from a F430 spider to an R8... previously had a 997 turbo tip... have to say the R8 is much more fun than the turbo and sounds better too... but if you want one car to replace the 430 the V10 Audi wins all day long, simply ticks all the boxes and obviously has the german build quality too... either way though you will not be disappointed which one you choose...

Are we assuming s/h then? New ones are PDK aren't they?

Having moved from a 997tt to R8 V10 I would say the audi is a better everyday car. The engine sounds great, the ride is less harsh in normal mode and the interior nicer. However the porsche has more space, the latest version a lot quicker as well as having a lot better traction in the winter!

I sold my 997 C4S last December and bought a F430 Spider and used it as my everyday car. It is brilliant, however it really isn't an everyday car. As you said you just end up worrying everytime you park it somewhere.

So, I've just bought a 997 Turbo with PDK and wow! It is unbelievable! It's comfortable, shockingly fast and so much more usable than the F430.

I test drove a V8 R8 and it was a lovely car, but here’s the problem I have with it. It's very wide, very low, get's a lot of attention (which is nice but can be annoying on an everyday car) It only has 2 seats and a tiny boot. If you are going to have all those impracticalities why not buy a used Gallardo and get a better car?

If it's an everyday car your after it has to be the 911 Turbo. It needs serviced every 2 years, I think it's about £400. It will get 30MPG on a motorway and can take 4 adults if needed.

Hope that helps

I have a LP560 for the weekend and a 997 TT for everyday use. It is way more pratical than a Audi "TT" R8. It has more interior space, has the option of carrying more than one passenger, most are better speced than a R8 (everything is an extra on the R8) has better performance and a far nicer interior. The R8 is a great car but really does feel like a TT when you sit in it (my wife has a TTS so nothing agianst the TT)but the interior feels very cheap on a £100k car. I seriously thought about a R8 at one point and even placed a deposit on one but it falls between two camps. It is not as pratical as a 997 but lacks the wow factor of a true super xcar such as a Ferrari or Lambo.

I've had 2 6 ft something guys in the back! There's not mountains of room in the back but it's enough to get home from the pub if needed. Plus even if you don't ever have anyone in the seats then it's a handy bit of extra storage.

That's exactly what I was trying to say.

I think most people seem to have missed the OPs point.

He's not selling the F430 he's getting another car to live alongside it.

If it were me I think i'd want something quite different. Not another mid engined sportscar.

Some would argue the 997 Turbo is different enough but i'd disagree - it's still another very quick, not particularly practical (in the grand scheme of things) supercar.

I'd be looking towards more of a GT. A Maserati Gran Turismo perhaps.

Alternatively you could accept that the extra purchasing, depreciation, insurance and servicing costs that another car would set you back, would easily exceed the increased costs of using the F430 much more!

Currently own a Porsche 997 C2S Tip and test drove an R8 V8 with the automated manual gearbox. I was totally blown away. What a wonderful car. It feels like the love child of a 997 and a 430. More important for the OP, it actually feels like an everyday car and seems pretty reliable and reasonable to run. It helped that the one I drove had parking camera and PDC at the front and rear and electic seats (also very comfy). But when you press on, it becomes an amimal.

4 adults... no chance unless they are 5 foot tall or the car is cab!

I used to think my 911Turbo was a 4 seater... until I got in the back once and had an immediate panic attack!!!!

you are also a little off on servicing in my experience if the cars used hard.

30mpg IS possible... but only if you are a saint!!

I run a earlier 996Turbo and an F430spider. Just bought an M3 as well, because as much as I tried to convince myself the 911 is practical. Its really not that practical compared with something that can take passengers and luggage like an M3, M5, M6 or fast Audi...

dare I suggest a Nissan GTR?
