I was wondering if anyone could enlighten me as to the up and down sides of purchasing one of these rather beautiful beasties. Softtop or hardtop? I am currently running a TVR Chimaera 450 which I absolutely adore but may be up for a change next year (wife finds the Tiv too shouty and not comfy enough over long distances. She would also like an electric hood!). Have not considered anything other than the Jag XKR in soft top form (decent one will be about £35k) as I have had many Jags and been very pleased with them. However, I spotted 4200 Masers in the classified here for £10k less. Not only that but the 4200 is so gorgeous to look at!

What are the costs for servicing, for instance? I also hear that they will need a new clutch every 30k (£1500 sh?). A long term users view would be most appreciated. Many thanks to the Italian section!

I ran one for 2 years, full manual hard top, not the paddle shift version. Was completely reliable and was great for trips to South of france and the like. Much more room inside than an XK and much more exclusive. Servicing will be more than the Jag but probably not much in it between the Mas and the TVR. Clutch wear is completely down to how it has been used and the CC (paddle shift versions) have a reputation for wearing clutches quicker than full manual, although most were CC. Also, the F1 pump has a tendency to go which is quite expensive to replace but other than that they are very strong.

They are a very real alternative to the XKs and 911s of the world and if they have been properly looked after should be a pleasure to own.
