P/X Supercars? Should we have a thread?????
Discussion
I've been thinking wouldn't it be a good idea if we had a thread or a section somewhere where owners of supercars can sell them cheaply. I'll explain
When you're looking at trying to sell a £60,70,80k Ferrari, Lambo etc Part exchange prices normally aren't great so for example a £60k Ferrari might get a trade bid of say £45k which a lot of people obviously just grit their teeth and take it. My suggestion is that if we had a section where Pistonhead members could post their cars just like a normal classifieds advert, AFTER they've had a trade price and are thinking of excepting it and say sell it for a little bit more than the trade bid but still well below market value. So for example
"I've been offered £45k trade in on my low mileage car worth about £60k, offers of £50k would be accepted."
That way the seller gets a little bit more money than they were going to get otherwise, meanwhile some buyers will get a bargain.
What's everyone's thoughts?

True you could do. I was just meaning a way of getting the car more attention if you know what I mean. By being allowed to post in this forum saying "my car is for sale but won't be for long" then that should get the car more attention and help sell it quicker.
Also, it might make people who aren't necessarily thinking of buying that particular model of car buy it. I.e someone who's maybe just looking for a sports car might snap up a £30k 360, whereas wouldn't have been looking at the 360s section in the classifieds.

I see where you're coming from and it's a nice idea (not that I'm in that market), but I guess a part of it is that a buyer who buys from a private seller has less comeback / warranty than if they buy from a reputable dealer who gives a warranty and has more to lose from a business point of view, and so the buyer has more peice of mind and legal standing in some respects..?

I think the point of it is that people would overlook the negatives of buying privately because the benefit of getting a car a lot below market value outweighs that.Edited by ROOODBOY on Monday 18th October 00:37
For example, someone who has an 05 Grigio Silverstone F430 that they're planning on getting rid of and can't be bothered with selling privately goes to a dealer on a Saturday and gets a quote of £60k for a trade in (a good 10k under private seller market rate). They then make a post in the thread saying "05 Grigio Silverstone F430, trade in offered 60k, will take 63k by Tuesday if anyone's interested". People in the market for an F430 get a chance to save several thousand over buying one from the classifieds if they're prepared to make a fast purchase, and the seller has a chance to gain a £3k to fund a Capristo for his replacement car

If there's no one who's up for a quick purchase, the seller then takes the trade-in offer at the cost of a negligible 3 day wait, which he was planning to do anyway.

Sounds a good idea to me...... That way everyone's a winner and rather than dealers taking money from both seller and buyer both parties share that wedge.....When you're looking at trying to sell a £60,70,80k Ferrari, Lambo etc Part exchange prices normally aren't great so for example a £60k Ferrari might get a trade bid of say £45k which a lot of people obviously just grit their teeth and take it. It can be done on ebay, when ordering your new car, get a delivery date, then list your car a week before the new one is due to arrive for a "cheap" price. For example, the dealer offers you £40k, start the auction at £40k and leave it run - encourage people to view before bidding and try and meet all potential buyers face to face. I did this and sold the car I got offered £16k for - for £18,500, book price would have put it at around £19-20k so everyone was a winner...could have sold it around 4 times over too.
An insulting trade-in price for the previous owner is what got me into my Porsche at a bargain price.
Still amazes me to this day- Long time Porsche owner, buying his 14th brand new porsche from the same garage, and he still gets an insulting trade-in price against a very-soon-to-arrive GT3. Along I come, offer 1K more than the garage, and bingo! Previous owner gets more cash than the garage would have given him, in time to pay for the new car. Great.

Absolutely exactly what I did last time around (on AutoTrader, Pistonheads and eBay), but same principal listing just over what I was offered trade and did end up selling it that way.you can already do this via the classified...
the biggest problem is private sellers - having got a low trade bid, then go on and ask too much for thier car, pointless...then they end up taking the low px price.
and if we are talking about F cars....dealers offer 2 yrs wty, therefore it follows independants have to be cheaper , and private sales even cheaper still.....
i dont mind buying privately, but it would have to be at least 6k cheaper than a dealer...bearing in mind you are taking the risk - and the cost of a PPI...
a 79k 430 spider retail is prob only 73/4 private....tops - yet muppets try and sell it for 76k..
i'll take the dealer at 79k then and get the wty.

I think this is a great idea - especially as I am the perfect example of this situation with my 360.
I spent quite a while and looked at a lot of cars, before a fellow PH'r & Club Scud member sent me a note about his car that he was 'thinking' of selling and noticed I was in the market after several posts asking for advice etc on here.
One look at the car and the love it had clearly had, compared to all the dealer cars (a few of which seemed to have come from auctions) made the purchase a no brainer, despite being a private buy, with no warranty etc. I was also able to meet the previous owner and see for myself how well the car had been cared for (the best kept garage I have ever seen) and you can search for all old topics and replies to see if it all stacks up.
I love my car, the ONLY reason I am changing is the fact that we have have a young daughter and we can't all go out in it. I knew this before I bought the car, but hadn't realised how much it would frustrate me seeing the Ferrari in the garage, while we used the Jaguar for short trips out or weekends away.
I have been offered a very fair px price against a Vanquish, but also posted a note on here saying if someone has the cash available and is in the market for a red/cream 360 ... it might be worth a look, but if not I'll just trade her against the Vanquish. It just seems a crime to px a car that I know has probably been one of the most loved, well cared for and fastidiously maintained cars out there.
Maybe the mods could start a topic as a sticky and people can post if they have a car which could yield them an extra few £k but still present a buyer with a relative bargain. Classified can be used yes, but it's not exactly the personal touch.
