Gallardo Power steering noise
Discussion
On full lock my Gallardo has always made a wirring/mechanical noise, this has never bothered me as other cars I have owned have done the same, so I was thinking it was normal. Anyway over the weekend I noticed it makes this same noise now when I make smaller turns of the wheel. When I last had the car serviced, I was advised that the power steering supply pipe to the pump was very slightly weeping and had aged, but was not a problem at the moment. Could there be a connection? Does anyone know where this pipe is situated within the car, and also where the power steering fluid is topped up so that I can check its level.
Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Hi PeterThanks in advance for any assistance!
you mentioned that the supply pipe was weeping, that is the cause for pretty much every single Gallardo fire. is your car pre 06? if so take it to Lamborghini Manchester or your nearest Lamborghini dealer and they will place around the pump a protective sleeve/heat shielding, stopping the chance of a fire. if the pipe it leaking badly then it may have to be replaced. It is easily avoided if something is done.
all the best, Patrick

I have worked on a pre 06 car that had been on fire because of this reason at Lamborghini Manchester and it is easily avoided it something is done.

I would rather not take my car to a lamborghini dealer as I have found some of their work to be not up to the standard I expect and cause more problems than solve, this is through my own experience. I would like to be able to locate and examine the issue first to find the root of the problem, then get it to a good Indy that I use if necessary.

I would rather not say who I have used as I dont think you can name and shame on here, but it wasn't Lambo Manchester, Reading, Sevenoaks or Birmingham. Just had a couple of bad experience re: servicing (Work not done), paintwork (awful job,bad paint match, orange peel, and masking tape marks). I got the impression that because my car was of less value than the usual cars they deal with, I had the tea boy do the work to my car! I use a great Indy in Bournemouth called Emblem now for servicing. Also a friend of mine is a very competent mechanic and has sorted several issues for me in the past to an 'exceptional' standard. He is going to take a look at what the problem may be. Its not that I am trying to be tight with money, I want the job done to a high standard but I have yet to see evidence these flash dealers give value for money. I always come away a touch nervous!
Thanks for the info Patrick, You have been a great help. My mate is having a look on his car at the moment to try and locate it!

Thanks Patrick, we took the relevant panels off, and discovered the power steering fluid container, it was filled to the correct level, and there was no leak. and miraculously the noise has now gone. I wish everything was so simple!
rather odd isn't it?I think I'd be a bit worried if someone was 100% sure it was leaking and now it has stopped.
Might be wise to do the work mentioned as a precaution just in case.

Friend had a 04 Egear that made this type of grinding noise when turning a corner and the official dealer said that they "all do that".

Just an update for anyone that may be interested. We found the weeping pipe. It wasnt weeping very badly but the problem seemed to be where it was so old it didn't seem to be able to cope with the pressure of the fluid going through it. It was at the stage of collapsing.
I ordered a new part from Eurospares for £37 and will be fitting it soon. Does anyone know the correct power steering fluid used in a Gallardo as I would like to replace that too.

Nice.if you get a mo could you do a pic slightly zoomed out.
.
Book says AGIP ATF 11 E. 2 LTRS .
Might be best to use the same, but prob any good quality atf 11 p/steering fluid
should be ok.? Audi dealer? or grab some from a lambo dealer.
cheers.
I will try and get a picture when the pipe is fitted.

I actually phoned up Lambo to find the correct fluid, what a pain in the ass that was, until I phoned Lambo Birmingham, who were incredibly helpful.
Dexron 2 or 3 is what Lambo use. It's a red colour. About £4 a litre from Euro car parts.
