308, 308 and 308

Oh, sorry, 308.

For ease of use - QV. One to avoid 2 valve injection model...but I'd now argue that condition is king. Buy one that isn't rotten. A lot have been clocked. They aren't hugely quick by the way (esp the 2 valve injection) but are as pretty as a picture. Tons more about them on this forum if you search.

To be honest, I don't think either will be much of an investment unless you keep them in pristine condition for 50 more years. biggrin

The 308 will be cheaper to maintain and prices have risen recently.

The 348 is at the bottom of the curve and as one of the most under rated Ferrari's, has nowhere to go but up.

Been offered (and turned down) £12k more than I paid for my Carb 308 just over a year ago. As mentioned injections are to be avoided, most desirable is vetroresina (higher entry price though) followed by Carb GTS/GTB, then QV, then injection. 308/328 prices have jumped considerably in the past year, no doubt as they are regarded as iconic.

Oh and having owned multiple 348's they are great cars but the 308 is much more raw and animalistic to drive. Depends what kind of driving experience you want, the 308 definitely appeals to me more.

They have been talked up over the past couple of years, but as they edge towards 355 money, I think they'll struggle to move any higher than that.

The reason I did not sell is because it took me seven months to find a good one and the possibility of finding a similar condition Carbed car was remote. I agree in that I think they will probably level out at 355/360/550 level of £40k-ish. It's hard to buy a good one for less than £30k now.

308 by a long way is the best investment. I personally think they will move higher than 355/360 etc. It has well and truly hit classic status.

From watching around 8:17 in the video..it looks like F355 prices will be at least double in 5 years for an original well maintained one????

What do you guy's think???

I think he's wrong. Far too many of them made. 550 is a better investment from that era due to low numbers.

Much as I like 550s and 355s, I wouldn't buy either as an investment to return me more than I could earn with a smart fund manager. Both were made in too great numbers. Michael Sheehan is (as always) on the money on these cars. But for sheer bang for buck and and every day usability, they score highly.IMHO of course...

for what its worth. I decided to buy a 348 at first rather than a 328, 355 or 360 or any of the V12s. Not bought for appreciation or worrying about depreciation or running costs. I bought it as a place to start with ferraris and then will look to get other ones - working both backwards and forwards through the marque so I can compare. All god fun. I did something similar with porsche ownership over the last 10 years from early 3.2s, 964s, 993, 996, to 996 GT2 and x50 Turbo and a number of repeats inbetween.

I wouldnt fret but enjoy researching them and responding to people's prejudices and loves to the various models and mods. I shall pick up my 348TB in a couple of weeks time. Will report back.

By the way angelis your feedback on 348 and related stuff is excellent reading. I also enjoy comments in equal measure from people who have no time for and those who really love the 348s - as they both ingnite a passionate response and to me that adds to the ownership experience. Short life might as well enjoy it.

Surely, investment is not realistic on any of the cars as they will always lose more to keep running than they will appreciate in the future.

I remember selling my pristine Elise S1 for £3k less than its worth now but I know that to keep it on the road in the same condition.

What about the 328? Better build quality and reliability than both and with the classic looks. idea

Good 308's have been rising in value for the past couple of years and vetroresina's for even longer, so good 348's may bounce back a little, but just as the 308 has the 328 above it in value, the 348 will always have the 355, so sheer supply and demand, would suggest that they wont loose a great deal, but as soon as you've factored in the running costs and at least in the case of a 308, the potential restoration costs, I can’t see a great deal of money to be made as short’ish term investment.

IMHO the question really should be, how long will the current classic car bubble last, will things turn early 90's as they've done to a certain extent with house values, where people suddenly found their £150k Dino or £300k F40 investments, worth a fraction of what they paid, or will the current value of the cars plateau and stay static . . . . either way, if interests go up, your better off leaving your money in the bank, if you want an investment rather than a car to drive smile

Im buying one to drive . Not so much as an investment . Would be nice not to loose a shed load of money when / if you have to sell . Thats the goal. Not to make a killing. I intend to keep it for a while. At least 5 years.

That being the case I suggest you try each of them out as neither will depreciate much. The 308 likely to cost less to run and is more of a classic car experience. The 348 engine sounds fantastic with the right exhaust.
