Maybe. I was thinking around that mark top end. I think there are one or two in Europe for around the £600k mark now, so maybe even less. Impossible to be too accurate as who knows how much work it needs.

its financial suicide buying that.
remember vw made a fair loss on the car but they sell parts full price.
48k for an alternater alone apparently.

if it was going to be an economical repair it wouldn't be getting auctioned off to the highest bidding mug.

£48k for an alternator?? How?

It's wound copper wire contacts a metal shaft and a housing. I'm guessing housing might be carbon fibre but I just don't get that.

Also IF that wee true would it be cheapr to buy loads of new batteries and keep swapping them I mean what would the battery be ...£300 go for a lorry amp hours possibly £500 so you could have near on 100 batteries £48k...I wonder if german and Swedish can source it or partco at a reasonable price.

In fact how much would a fabricated part cost??

My thoughts entirely.

I think parts prices are based on people being able to say 'My alternator blew up and cost £50k to replace' and feel good about it, rather than what the actual cost is. Happy to be proven wrong that the alternator has some serious kit inside to cost that much to make.

It's because the internet is he ultimate version of Chinese whispers. You'll no doubt find that someone had to have their alternator changed, which probably means taking the engine out knowing that car....

...so they had a major service at the same time, including new wheels and tires etc etc and the total bill was £45k. Cue 'Internet Fact Mangler' and your alternator is now £45k.
