Car noise levels in the States

I recently returned from Miami in the States. During my stay I saw almost every car imaginable, however I did notice that the supercars there such as you Gallardo and Ferrari's were so quiet compared to the European versions. An Lp640 went past me and floored it, it hardly made a sound, the only car that I remember hearing and thinking that’s loud was a 458, but I’m pretty sure it was an import. Has anyone else noticed this while visiting the states?

Some states have quite strict noise regulations on cars, some are completely lax with regard to them. Though now I think about it, during the time I spent in Florida I do not recall ever hearing a loud exhaust, even from those cars that would appear to be the type to have huge burbly V8s under the bonnet.

They have secondary cats over there (an extra set of cats over European cars) for emissions which are stricter.
