Ok Folks

So Im into the fourth week of ownership of my 355 spider. Now I have got over the tumble dryer issue there seem to be a number of things wrong.

1. The extreme smell of petrol which I will deal with when I have the car fixed.

I have noticed that when I reverse the car out of the garage when cold there is an interesting noise from the engine that sounds like two saucepans beinging banged together.

Assuming I dont explode the car due to the obvious petrol leak anyone have any idea what the noise might be.

Once we have the Easter weekend out the way I will be leaving the car with the garage I bought it from however some advice would be good.

Hopefully if it doesnt explode on the way I will be taking the car to Auto Italia at brooklands next Saturday I could really do with someone who knows a thing or to having a look at it.

Thanks for all your help

Wendy

Hi Wendy.

I think I posted my ideas on the petrol smell.
On the reversing issue, I've not come cross that before. It's odd that it only does it when reversing. Is it related to engine or road speed? (ie, if you rev it when in reverse, is it worse, or is it worse the faster you go in reverse?)

I'd think if it were clutch, it'd be the same forwards as backwards. Same with most things in the drivetrain. That leaves either gearbox issue (hope not) or simply something caught somewhere which is catching when you reverse.

I can highly recommend an independent mechanic in East London (which I appreciate is a fair distance) however he looks after all my cars and is extremely good.

Perhaps pop the engine cover and ask a friend to wlk beside the car as you reverse to try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from?

Thanks for your help, I used to have a Porsche that was basically easy to understand if somthing went wrong. With the 355 I think I have bought a nightmare. I dont mind spending money on it but the issue for me here is how can somone sell a car with so many problems.

Should I just expect this or shoudl I complain ?

How long is a piece of string?
It should be quite reliable, however they are an old car and also second hand, so there are always bound to be teething issues.
that's why I always advocate that people buy cars which have been used regularly and had all the usual gremlins sorted.

Like I said, I've finally found a guy whom I trust. Bit of a trek but I (and others can corroborate) cannot recommend highly enough.

Back on topic, is the reversing issue only when cold? Does it go away when warm/hot?

Hi

yes when its warm its fine, the issue is for me being a woman 355 owner wth a husband that doesnt really care if he drives a nissan micra or a bentley i have some issues. I need to find somone who I can trust to sort the car out so it just functions normally. Also I bought the car under warrenty so I need to get as much fixed as i can using the warrenty. If posible

Fine when warm sounds like its either and oil issue (which I doubt) or more likely the exhaust which is clattering.
Either the catalytic converters are shot to bits or something is rattling around until it warms up and seals.

Again, difficult to tell unless seen / heard but if its fine when hot, I'd suggest leaving it to cool down completely somwhere then seeing if the clattering noise happens if you drive forwards as well as back. If it does, then I doubt it's drivetrain related (which by all accounts is fairly bombproof anyway).

Just my 2c

I am no mechanic, but I also think it's an exhaust problem.

All the best.

If it's exhaust why would it only happen in reverse?

How long have you had the car? If under 3 months the dealer will have to sort it, even if they said there are no come backs!

Aren't we getting slightly ahead of ourselves here

You are new to the marque and you have some queries but have you even spoken to the supplier yet ?

Most people here who post here having dealt with them have nothing but praise

Try calling them tomorrow

I am guessing that it's nothing to do with being in reverse, but just the engine/exhaust being at its coldest. I am guessing the OP usually reverses out of her garage. Possibly a problem with the silencer or heat-shield.

I always reverse mine out cold and it makes a bit of a clanging sound. No idea what it is, never bothered to look.

I don't know where the car came from, but assuming you had an inspectioon etc etc before buying you shouldn't be having all these issues.

With regards to a good garage to take it to, i am also in surrey and the only place mine would go to is Qv London in Ascot. Mike is the guy you want.

From the comments Of others I assume it came from one of the London independents ? Not great in my experience

Don't panic, its not going to blow up.

that's what I said. My guess is either the cats are shagged (BTW, I have a set of decat pipes kicking around somewhere if memory serves) or one of the exhaust clamps is loose and needs tightening up.

Either way, nothing major.
