Driving route to Venice

Any suggestions on a recommended driving route ex UK to Venice please with appropriate hotels with decent food and wine, car parking, ambience and scenery??

I went last year via Lake Garda. Some great mountain roads through the Alps to Garda and South East of Garda BUT avoid the Autostrada towards Trieste if possible as full of trucks and only 2 lane so a bit of a nightmare. Enjoy the trip!
