After following the "Is a Zonda really worth it?" thread, the above question popped into my head. While the Huayra is by all accounts a techically better car, did Pagani actually peak with the Zonda and is it all downhill from now on? The general consensus among petrol heads seem to be going for a Zonda given the choice between that and a Huayra, and demand for the Huayra is apparently lower than expected.

The Huayra is "uglier" than the Zonda, has been built to meet international standards for export and not necessarily what Pagani may have wanted and "screw the law", and will also, if all goes according to plan, sell more units so will be less rare/special.

Have Pagani shot themselves in the foot by trying to make a car more "accessible"?

Just playing devil's advocate here smile

Interesting question Mario. Anyone who has read my ramberlings on the subject of Zonda's will know I am a fan, but on the flip side I like to think I can be open minded to the possible failings of the company and its new direction.

As a debut product Pagani could not have done much better, I think most would agree on that point. But by his own admission the Zonda, great as it is actually getting close to being a 20 year old design. Also legislation would not allow it to continue.

To build a solid company for the future Pagani had to expand his client base, therefore he has to cater to the Americans who would have loved to buy the Zonda but were not allowed two.

If the hype is too be believed the Huayra is the better technical car (Subjective of course). Those who have seen it in the flesh have confirmed it to be master piece, but to others its looks have split opinion.

The order books are currently full for at least the next couple of years so it seems he may have got it right but there will always be those who think that it would be almost impossible to better the Zonda.

My hope is that the Huayra is a success as the car world would be a much duller place without the single minded vision of the likes of Pagani. I can think of no other current manufacturer who can blend art with engineering in such an evocative way. Long may he continue

Excellent post and well balanced. I too hope Pagani succeed although a lottery win will be required even to get on the waiting list. I visited their factory a couple of years ago and the attention to detail was amazing. Plus a really dedicated workforce with a "nothing is too much trouble" attitude. I wish them well.
