I'm looking for some advice on touring in Europe. I have a friend who has a 1994 BMW 850csi garaged in London (unfortunately cant take my 3200!) and we are contemplating a European trip in September 2012. We are keen on the Transfergarison Highway in Romania and then wend ourway westwards through Austria, the unrestricted autobahns of Germany through Switzerland and down along the Riveria and France to finish back in London and garage the car again.
My question is: Are we better shipping the car to Istanbul or Athens or driving from London? The trip would be more enjoyable if we were to go one way (Istanbul/Athens - London) but we aren't sure of the customs rules concerning shipping cars into countries even though we will be driving back to London. Do we need Carnets etc if we bring the car in by sea? We are expecting to take two weeks and a round trip would eat into this time to the point we may have to reconsider the route.
Can anyone offer some opinion regarding shipping the car versus having to do the round trip?
