Cheer Up A Man In Southport: 26/6/11
Kind of like a Sunday Service, but done to cheer up a hospital-bound biker
We all know riding a bike isn't the safest activity in the world, but it doesn't make it any less awful when a biker is killed or seriously injured. So when Carl Rea got in touch with us about his plans to cheer up his mate Darren - who has been stuck paralysed in a Southport hospital for three years - we felt we just had to help out.
Southport is not the world's most beautiful place, and staring at a hospital ceiling for three years can't be the most fun of activities, so Carl has helped to organise a 'Stay Positive Darren' ride-out to Southport on Sunday 26th June
The plan is to gather as many cars as possible in the car park at the rear of the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital, for a Sunday Service-style natter and to meet Darren who, as well as being a biker, is also a committed petrolhead.
There will be several muster points along the way, the main one being Rivington Barn in Horwich at 10:30am, before riding/driving to Southport Spinal Injuries Unit via Belmont, Chorley, Crosten and onto the A59 and then A565 into Southport.
People are also travelling from Squires cafe, Yorkshire, stopping off at Hearts Head services just after J26 of the M62 at 9:30am.
So if you're free the Sunday after next and fancy heading up Southport way then head along - and help give young Darren a much-needed cheer-up...
You can find out more info about the ride-out and the Fallen Bikers charity that Carl helped to set up by following this link.

(even though the guy's a "petrolhead"..
Having said that, if you want to spread the word in BB, and point them in the direction of this article that would be a fine idea

"Southport is not the world's most beautiful place"
Spoken by somebody who quite obviously hasn't been.
For those of you who are attending can I recommend you try and visit the main shopping avenue, i.e. Lord Street, and sample the Victorian arcades and pavement cafe's.
OK it might not be Paris but it's not worthy of your offhand slight.
Yes, I'll be there too as it's a very worthy idea.

- and ps, calling it 'not the world's most beautiful place' is hardly a massive criticism

Oh and some parts of southport are not that good but i would reccommend lird st for some shopping or just a walk as well as ocean plaza where you can park up and go for a walk along the seafront.

Having said that I found Southport a pain to live in - full of OAPs clogging up the roads, scousers at weekend and holiday periods, and a lack of development for the locals.
I don't think I've ever met anyone with such a positive outlook considering the position he is in.
Thanks for all your help chaps.

Seriously though, in this mighty age of personal avarice in almost every walk of life, right to the very top of the tree, great to see people trying to put something back
