Hello -
just wondering what everyone thinks we should do with this.
We're going to pick a track and car type and the competition will be based on the fastest lap. We're not going to stop anyone going round and round unless there's a queue... We've never done anything like this before so not sure how best it would work.
Any thoughts?
1 winner, 5 runners up.
Prize giving end of Sunday.

Off to buy an Xbox to practise now.....

Why not something like Knockhill or Croft - i.e. a smaller lesser known track down South that way people like me (who have never driven a track before) stand an "equal" chance.
I would be more inclinded to offer a normal car as vehicle of choice i.e. a caterham or BTCC due to the copious amounts of alcohol consumed...
I would also say a F1 qualifying type arrangement could work - you can have 12 flying laps in which to set the best time (no in/out laps) but these have to be done seperatly.

Do you mean 12 seperate go's or one go but with 12 laps?
I'm guessing you don't get an opportunity to change settings like dampers and gearing as this may make it unfair, or would that be more fun?...........
This should be good, I wonder how seriously people are going to take it

oooh, the game has a very good sort of testing/set up section to it so we could do complete set up testing laps... say something like 12 laps meaning a max of 12 set up changes but that wouldn't give you time to adjust your styles?
the best tactic would be to set it up, 1 lap, make some changes and go balls out!
There's something like £500's worth of prizes up for grabs...now that's worth buying a ticket for!!

Personally I would be inclinded not to allow people to change set-ups, the reason is simple - I'm not a mechanic nor too knowledgeable about what makes a car work well, people who do would have an unfair advantage over people like me.
Of course the name of the game is to get the best time using all of your abilities so if you know the track and the best set-up you should be allowed to use that but I hope you can see my point (there will be a fair few people who like cars, can drive them but know little or indeed nothing about the mechanics, and then there are the partners/friends along for the show) - for instance if I knew FourWheelDrift, AJlintern or similar were entering, I'd walk away as I'd have no chance of competing.
As for the 12 laps, personally I would say you have 12 timed laps / shots i.e. you get an out lap, a practice lap and and timed lap, 12 times. Thats 12 * 2 * 1.5 = 36mins of racing per person, I wouldn't have set-up nor unlimited practice/times available. If it's busy you get one slot (out/practice/timed) before letting another person in, otherwise you could take all 12 timed laps at once.
It could add some excitement to call back the fastest of the weekend for a head-to-head type afair near the end as well, or maybe a two player race if you have enough prices for both?

we'll make sure we have another prize available just incase there's some form of tie.. or near.
we'll stick with your idea then of no set up. I do like the idea of the out, practice, timed. but let's knock it down to 10 laps in total... number of laps at a time dependant on how busy it is at the stall.
we have 2 pods so can have 2 people going @ the same time.
I'll have to check what cars can go where, but something like GT Lights (radical types) may be a good idea. Easy to drive, pretty nippy.

to take it back and get the refund if he wins... either way he leaves pistonfest as an xbox owner, or an xbox owner plus a receipt worth circa £200
i say we have a litle congregation on saturday morning and make the decisions... so it can be tested and tried.
what about... one machine set up with the F1 car on Donnington, and the other set up with a total free for all but a bar on donnington or F1 cars... so if it's quite we're not stopping people from playing? surely that'd be better?
